Subject: Newbie here - Do I have time???

I have been training 2 weeks, 6 days a week for a Sprint Tri on August 15th. I have the bike and run down comfortably, however the swim is kicking my butt. I can't swim more than 150 yds consecutively on a breast stroke. I have 1 month to get up to the 400 yd swim at the race...Can I do it???

 Thanks in advance?

Will need more info since you're not logging your workouts on BT, but for now, how many times a week have you been swimming? Have you tried slowing down on breast stroke? A lot of people start out too fast on the swim when they begin. Try slowing down.

If you can get in the pool several times a week and slowly increase your set distances, then probably.

Something like 3 times a week and make a plan for the next 4 weeks.

How many time are swimming per week now and how many yards?

For what it's worth, I've coached an age-group swim team for the past three years and I definitely know how scary a 400 can be the first time!  Nothing wrong with breaking it down at first.  From what you said I'm thinking breaststroke's your strongest stroke... so at first, why not try six 50s, going down freestyle and coming back breaststroke?  Take 30-45 sec rest in between each.  Then the next time, try six 75s?  But yeah, ditto to getting in often, going once a week won't help your endurance too much!

&I'm in the same place as you, just with running.  Went from 0 to 3miles in the past two weeks and my first tri's Aug 10!  Good luck!

if you relax you can

relax

if you can do the other things, you have the fitness

you don't have to sit nekked and hummm,,, but you do need to relax into whatever plan you decide to work.

that's my .02

get the total immersion book and DVD watch the DVD it takes 30 minutes and read the book, takes about 2 hours.  do the drills 4-5 times per week with some straight swimming also.  This is true: I went from struggling through 200 yards one day to swimming 1000 yards the next.  I can now basically swim forever albeit at a slow, but very aerobic speed,  6 months later.  In my last 2 tris I have in the top half of swims overall with 0 swim background.  Be consistent for the next 4 weeks and you will be fine. Good luck!!

I paid for a one hour lesson with a swim coach when I was just about where you are now. She gave me just a few key things to work on, but it made an enormous difference. Swimming is all about technique. I highly recommend you see if there is a local coach who could give you some pointers. With your level of fitness in the other sports I'd be willing to bet a few technique lessons are all you need to improve on the swim. Best of luck!
