I was happy to meet a few of you there and more happy to see the results of a few names I recognized - way to go Pam Grande and Scott Goehner! If there are others, I apologize.

I didn't drown, so I was pleased!

Did anyone else notice that the bike distance might not have been 15 miles? My bike computer read 14.25 at the finish and I checked with another sprint participant and she had about the same reading. I doubted that my bike time was faster than my last tri and this might confirm why. Also, for your sprint distance bikers - how did you like that turn around on Highway N?

Anyways, I had fun and as I mentioned it was nice to meet some of you today!

Tracy

I thought the swim seemed longer than 1/4 mile.  Over all it was a good race and absolutely perfect weather!!!

That turn around nearly killed me....  Back brake locked up and I went sliding.  Who's dumb idea was that????

Great meeting you today as well Tracy.  I also heard the swim was 650, and I had the bike at 14.13, but I think mutri said he had it as 14.25 as well.

Ugh that stupid turn around on the bike!! That was the dumbest thing ever. Not to mention the guy who pretty much came to a complete stop in front of me.

Heh and you have the people who turned around early and skipped .3 miles on the run cough(mutri)cough... heh

But other than that, I thought it was a great race and had an awesome time! Ooh and I got to play on the new bike This was by far my fastest race ever!

Here is the response I received from the Race Director about the bike portion. I replied asking about the swim distance as well. I did not bike 14.4 miles - closer to 14.25. Couldn't he have made that Highway N turnaround thing a little longer to compensate for the distance?

As a new triathlete - is it common to change the distance of a race? It would be nice if someone would let us know that in advance.

Tracy -

The actual distance was 14.4 miles. We had to shorten it a little bit to
keep it safe and have the one turn around point for both race distances.

I hope you enjoyed the race.

Ryan's a good guy and this was the first time his company has put on a tri. (He's the guy that runs the aquathons in Madison.) I'm sure he'll take constructive feedback and use it to improve the race next year.

Here is the reply about the swim distance...
------------------------------------------
Tracy -

We did not change the distance. We must have had troubles with the gps we laid
it out with. It read 400 meters, but obviously it was longer. I am guessing
closer to 600 based on the fastest times.

Also, I wanted to say that I spoke with Ryan on Saturday at the kid's race and he was very helpful. He was also very quick to reply to my inquiries yesterday and today. I didn't mean for my post to be critical of him or his team - I was just curious if it is normal to change the distance of the event or not since I am very new to this. I enjoyed the race yesterday and my son loved the kid's race - we'll be back.

I wouldn't say it's "normal" - but if there are safety reasons, it's not unheard of. Usually, they'll send out an email before hand if the course changes (a'la Pardeeville's run course this year, or Pewaukee switching to a du). I'm not sure who did this race last year, but it was a hand-over year, so my guess is details fell through the cracks.

I thought the race was fun, the course was in a good location, and the organizers and volunteers were friendly, and while all the wrinkles weren't ironed out, i have a feeling this will simply get better and better over the next couple years.

Whenever there is a goofy distance problem etc with the course, i usually just try and remind myself that everyone else is dealing with the same goofy problem, so I should try to deal with it better than other folks... I think the orgainizer will make some improvements for next year. I heard one of the main peeps talking about how they are already planning on moving the finish line next year so its a little more seperated from the oly turn around.....

I am just glad we have a good race, nearby that's proceeds go to a good cause!

Good job to all those who raced!

As I mentioned in my RR, I am good friends with the RD Ryan.  I talked to him a couple times after the race and even informed one of his assistant, who I am also good friends with, about the problem with some mistakingly turning at the super sprint run turn around because of poor communication from the volunteers.  I am sure that things will get ironed out and improved upon next year.  As Deanna mentioned, I think this is his first or second tri but has done aquathons and have heard they are very well run.  I mentioned that having the super sprint and kids race on Saturday and the sprint and oly on Sunday and he thought that was a good idea and would see what could be done next year.
