did my first outside ride of the year today, and it was awesome!!!! my husband and i rode with a friend of his. planned 30 miles, ended up doing 33. roads were a little icy starting out (in the shade, anyway), which made me nervous. used to ride year round, but now i have kids and a bolt in my elbow, so i'm a little more wary than when i was young(er).

anyway, it was still a glorious ride. so nice to be out in the open air instead of in the basement. saw folks ice fishing, sledding, skiing, etc. saw 5 deer cross the rode in leaps and bounds, including a pretty magnificent buck. the whole ride was very pretty, crossing over farm lands and rolling hills, with a few thigh burning climbs here are there.

we're shopping for new pedals for me though. the wellgos i have can kiss my raspberried knees. after riding clipless for 10+ years with no timbers, i've now had TWO with these pedals! for those who remember my knee picture from last year, i now have a matched set (and this through tights, no less), and a nice chunk (literally) out of my right elbow (and a whole in base layer i was wearing. jersey and windbreaker are fine though - very strange).

ps. one funny. my hr monitor says i burned 2767 calories. ended up doing a split off my 30 min swim last night, so its counting that at my biking hr. too funny. bring be a big mac! wait, make that three!

Yikes! Matching Patellar Raspberries, huh? Sorry to hear that. And a chunk out of your elbow? Are you sure you aren't related to me? Hopefully you won't have a contusion, my doc told me that my elbows could be painful to the touch for a long time to come (maybe as long as 5 years!)...

Enjoy thos Big Macs.

i hope it doesn't hurt for 5 years. my left elbow still hurts when it rains from my big crash in 98! went out to chevy's, since i could download the nutritional information for some of the dishes and still keep my calories under control. i've had two days in the last week where (according to my hrm), i burned almost as many calories working out as i consumed for the day!

Cycling here in N Minnesota has been great all winter. I've been out about once a week. Would be out more often, but daylight is the issue.

Take the tire pressure down on the MTB and hit the snowmobile trails. Riding on a MTB off road in the winter is slow enough that "wind chill" isn't usually a factor. The few fast chilling downhills are quickly replaced by a slow heat generating uphills.

Riding in snowmobile tracks at 30 MPH on an unplowed, snowy, downhill forest road can be quite exciting. The wipeouts usually result in a long, soft snowy slide. No raspberries.

in my younger days, i'd be there! i grew up in duluth and biked those hills all winter long. however, its hard to bring my two kidlets in the burley when its below 20 degrees, and harder still to convince a babysitter to come over early on a saturday morning so my husband and i can go for a ride. all our stars aligned yesterday, so we lucked out.

before i had kids, i biked year round (duluth, st. paul, etc.) and SOOOO loved riding in the winter. i was always warmer than the folks shoveling off their cars. only had one big crash (dislocated/broken elbow) and only a few smaller ones (that didn't even cause any raspberries!). when my kids are older, i'll probably do more winter riding again. yesterday was good therapy for my new found willies about ice. went over several patches of black ice, slush, frost, etc. with my new road bike, something i never would have done even when i was riding full time. a good confidence builder.

Autumn,

I've got two kids as well... and a very understanding wife that lets me take off for a couple of hours on Sat and Sun.

Riding in tough conditions really hones bike skills.

We still have quite a bit of snow up here, even after last week's spring like weather. I wanted to break out the road bike on Friday, but the roads were still covered in sand and calcium chloride. I am trying to sell my roadbike so I figured it wasn't worth the risk of a wipe out or additional oxidation caused by the salt. Also, all the snow in the ditches really limits the bail out opportunities if I need to avoid a car.

If you get a chance you ought to sign up for our local sprint tri up here this August 13. The Northwoods Tri here in Nevis is very well run and has wonderful scenery. The area is also quite family friendly.

David

i'm doing the brewhouse long course in duluth on the 7th. if i'm not exhausted, maybe we'll head over to nevis!

my hubby is very supportive, but he wants to get out to ride just as much if not more than i do, which complicates things as far as the kids go. once its nicer, we can pop them in the burley and ride the gateway trail on the weekends.
