I was just curious what some people felt were the best races of 2008 in the around the area? This may help in choosing for next year.

Best water to swim in for me was : Logansport River City Tri

Best Swim course set up: Mississinewa buoys all the way around and easy to spot

Worst Swim water: Cicero that water was nasty

Best bike course: Mississinewa, I liked the small rollers and view. Kokomo second

Worst Bike course: hands down Tri America in Michigan City, River City close second

Best Run Course I liked Tri America course and Mississinewa the best

Worst Run Course River City I just don't like the trails and not knowing how far you run.

Overall I really like Mississinewa, Kokomo, and Muncie for a long course

Didn't like: Steelhead 70.3 didn't like the way it's set up course is ok

Best Price Layfayette $26 for USTA members and Mississinewa $35

Overpriced Cicero $50 for USTA and $60 non for a supersprint with not much in return

Best goodies bag: Tri America 2-shirts, water bottle, Plate holder, cell phone clip, towel.

that's my list for now.

Ron

Best Run Course: Warsaw
Best Bike: Wawasee
Best Swim: Muncie Endurathon

Worst Swim: BY FAR THE MOST AWFUL SWIM CONDITIONS IS SHELBYVILLE!!!
Worst Bike: Tri-America....my innerds hurt from all the bumps and RR tracks
Worst Run:Tri-America only because it was a two lap 7.5k....metally hard to get to TA and then turn around and head out again.

Would do Shelbyville again as a du (as I did this year).  Will do Tri-America again IF they change the bike course.

Cool thread. I only did a few races this year and only a couple were around here so I can't contribute too much.

Lafayette YMCA Tri: This is a fun, low-key race. It's organized pretty well and is cheap. No reason not to do this race. They had a ton of chocolate chip cookies and homemade brownies at the end. What's not to like.

Steelhead: This race has a ton going against it for me. The swim was cancelled because of rough water. There was a lot of talk about this and frankly, I still don't understand it. The bike course is uneventful to ugly. The run course is two shadeless (boring) loops through the Whirlpool "campus". It's expensive because it is now an official Ironman-branded race. The lake, of course, is beautiful. Benton Harbor? Not so much. That being said, people seem to love this race so maybe there is something wrong with me. Who know? Entirely possible.

Pokagon Oly in Angola, Indiana was great.  Just don't expect a fast run split.  While beautiful, the run has plenty of hills and 100% is on trials throughout the state park.

Kokomo had the best transition area by far, practically parked my car next to my bike. Can not find better water than Logansport, and the trail run at Pokagan has to be the best run (fell every year)! Warsaw bike was probably the best since it included some hills, flats, and some criterium type turns.

What a great season, did not have a bad race venue the entire year.

A race that is definitely worth the trip is the Maumee Bay (sprint and oly) near Toledo, Ohio. It is a state park that is basically a very nice resort. The swim is in a great inland lake, the bike is flat and fast, and the run is along the Lake Erie beach. HFP puts it on, and it's a first class event (had that Ironman party atmosphere).

I only did 4 this year in Indiana and 2 in Michigan.

Lafayette is fun and 5 miles from my house so I like that one.  All three legs are nice.

Tri Indy had one of the nicest runs I have done, but I don't like the water in the canal no matter how clean "they" say it is.

Steelhead was good, but I would like to try something new next year for a 70.3.

Firecracker Sprint in Benton Harbor was a good way to get a preview for Steelhead.  If you are going to do Steelhead for the first time next year, I highly recommend doing the firecracker.

Terre Haute was okay, but it just didn't have any redeeming qualities to make me want to do it again.

Carmel, splash, Flash and Dash is a good pre-season check of where you are at.

It's almost time to start planning for next years events!  Give me your suggestions.  I am going to go as long as HIM in 2009.

For an HIM, try the Muncie Endurathon (middle of July).  They also have a sprint and an Aqua-Bike (same course and distance as the HIM, but no run).

I agree for a 70.3 Muncie is a great race, I also plan to do the great Illini in Sept. for my second 1/2. I will probably do Lafayette to see where I'm at in the spring. I'm going to do more long distance running to get ready for IMFL.

Right now my events will be

Mini Marathon--May
Laf. tri--June
Munice 70.3-- July
Sizzling Century bike ride-- august
Great Illini 70.3 in Sept.
Ironman Florida in Nov.

lots of running swimming and biking from July through late October.

Goals are 5000 miles--bike, 250,000 yards swim, and 1000 miles running.

Sub 5 hr HIM
Sub 11 hr IM.

Hopefully I'll see some of you along the way

Carmel- Splash, Flash and Dash: nice starter sprint all the way around.
Great for seeing improvements from year to year - well organized.

Muncie- Endurathon Sprint: best (tasting) lake water to swallow without gagging on it (and keep going). Bike course would rock if they would pave over all the drizzled asphalt fixes.

Peru- Mississinewa Sprint: nice wide swim course, I really liked the bike course and the part trail / part road run course adds a little something extra to the race.

Best value was Mississinewa
Best race (personal time) was Carmel
If I could only do one sprint next year I'd do Mississinewa.

Logansport has a lot going for it because the swim is really nice (clean, clear, warm) and the run would be just about perfect because it's pretty BUT i really wanted to know where I was in the mileage, and after the mile 1 water stop, I had no clue.  My run time really didn't tell me because I know i run trails slower than normal, but I don't know HOW MUCH slower.  The occasional spectator would say,"Oh the finish is 500 yards."  BS, it was not!  Logansport was really cool - even with the fact that I got a speeding ticket for going 70 in a 65 (it was foggy) on the way there.

Ron, where is the Sizzling Century?  I like your '09 plan.  I may do all of those except for the Mini and the IM.

It's in Kokomo, this year it was the same time as the Indy tri. They have 34/62/100 options that go north to Delphi.

Yeah, well I am going to skip the Tri Indy next year.  I did not care for the canal water enough to drink more of it next year.  Kokomo is nice and close also!

I checked out the canal water Friday as I was waiting for the Irish Fest 5k - ya, I wasn't too upset at having NOT swam in that!

Irish Fest 5K was pretty!  Canal and river and Lucas Oil Stadium all lit up at night.  It was pretty.

Was the race well done?  I wanted to do that but had other obligations.  It looked like it would be fun.  I'll put it on my calendar for next year if you think it's worth doing.

I'm starting to put together a plan for 2009 races.  Of all the Indiana races that folks have listed so far, it looks like Pokagon is the only oly.  I'd like to do at least two olys next year.  Any other races in the area that folks can recommend or am I going to have to start looking at a travel race?

The Indy Tri in the canal is an olympic and I think Terre Haute is close to an olympic. I know in Kokomo we are working on that distance but I don't think we will have it until 2010. New races seem to be popping up every year so you never know if one may start.

Tri America short course was between a sprint and olympic and the long course was between an olympic and a HIM.

I'm kind of skeptical that Tri Indy will even happen in 2009.  The water was pretty bad this year and it had only been a few months since the big cleaning.  Unless there is a contract to dredge every year I imagine it will be too thick to swim in by the time next year rolls around.

I'll take a second look at Terre Haute and will definitely keep my eye on Kokomo.

I will admit that I'm intrigued by the Tri America race.  The longer distances are less of a stretch than shooting for HIM distance.  It's on my radar but I'm not completely sold on it yet.

I signed up and did the Terre Haute tri thinking it was an oly.  Of course I found out that it was just a longer sprint basically.  I won't do that one next year.  It wasn't that great and I had a bad experience at the host motel and the manager would not return my calls or e-mails to try and fix the problem.  Not the Race Directors fault, but it left a bad taste for me.  Plus the swim and bike were nothing special.  The run was nice though.

I too would like to do some oly's in 2009.  I am going to stick to shorter distances.  Oly will be my longest in 2009...I think.

Pokagon (Olympic) is a unique one because it's SO early....water has been cold both years, which adds to the difficulty, the bike is usually windy, and the run is all trail, but is very pretty.  Absolutley kicked my butt the first time.  The second was a much better experience and I met my time goal...beat my goal by 10 minutes!  The first year, there were about 100 people with about 20 females.  This year there were about 100 people with FIVE females!  (the preceding week was pretty cold and I think several tri participants opted for the du).

I emailed the RD a few weeks ago and it's on according to him. Was the water really that bad? I didn't think it was any worse than any lake I've swam in.
