Subject: Relocating to the Overland Park area...biking question?

In the near future.  Could anyone tell me if there is a good bike atlas/map out there for the KC area?  Coming from Minneapolis and we have one map style and the local bike club produces a great book with various routes they use.  Know of anything similar in the KC area?  And where would I pick one up?

Also, I know I will need a good bike shop and run shop.  Living near 435 and 107 street.  So, any recommendations you have would be great.

Here is a link to the Johnson County Trail maps, you can request a hard copy via email or pick one up at the Shawnee Mission park Ranger Station.

I do most of my bike related shopping at BikeSource at 135th and Quivira. Run stuff comes either from Gary Gribble's at 119th & Quivira or the New Balance store at 119th between Nall and Metcalf.

Lots of great bike trails in Johnson county and they keep adding/connecting them as time goes on. They are in the middle of connecting my subdivision to the Olathe section currently.

For most of my rides, I head south out of town and ride on the road around the Stillwell, Springhill area.

For bike routes, I would just add to what the guys have already mentioned. Get to Old Metcalf and you can go past Louisbourg, than across to Springhill via 223rd.......Southern Johnson County seems your best bet.

Drew,
I finaly figured this is you. Aleks here. We rode together few weeks ago from Luisbourg. Saw your bike at Jeff's shop, I recognized it. Glad you like the shop. I like it too. I am on Argon18 E112 now. Got it two weeks ago from Jeff. Hope to catch you again.
I apologize, did not mean to hijack the thread. Give Elte Cycling a shot. You may like it in addition to Bikesource. Another option in town, that is directed a little more toward triathlon.

Thanks everyone!  Very helpful information.

Out of curosity are most of you year round outdoor riders?  Not talking everyday as the days get shorter but do you find that you still get out for a weekend ride most of the year?  Coming from Minneapolis where that is not quite the case for me (but is for some).

I am equiped and capable of down to 32F, no wind and dry. Other than that, trainer in the garage, mp3 tuned to mix 93.3 and keep going until my eye balls pop.

That's just crazy. Clearly 96.5 plays better music

If you have the gear and the roads are dry, the temp can be pretty low. One thing you'll have to watch out for is all the sand/salt residue on the shoulders if it has snowed recently. I'd imagine you've had plenty of experience with that in Minnesota though.

Also, if football is on, it seems like my threshold goes up a few more degrees. I'll deal with being indoors on the trainer if there's something to keep my interest while I spin.

Does anyone have a gym recommendation?  Looking for a place with a pool (that is actually usable and not super crowded all the time) where I could also possibily get some decent swim lessons.  And the other main use would be spin class.

I do most of my workouts at the fitness center at work, but I also belong to Prarie Life Center for pool access. They have locations in Overland Park (103rd east of Metcalf) and Olathe (135th east of Blackbob).

I've only been to the Overland Park location a few times when the Olathe pool was closed. They both have indoor and outdoor pools with lap lanes. The OP location has a kids swim team that takes up some of the schedule for the indoor pool in addition to the usual array of water aerobics, lessons, etc.

Both places also have several Masters swim sessions. I think they are on similar schedules (Tues & Thurs mornings and a different group that meets Tues & Thurs evenings). There's also one on Saturday morning in Olathe, not sure about OP.

Check out the YMCA if you haven't already.  19 locations in the city, most with pools and most if not all offer spin classes.  I swim at Olathe YMCA, and very rarely is it very packed, but then they have a seperate lap pool from the general fitness pool.  Nice not having to compete with kids playing tag or water aerobics while trying to swim.
