Age Group Rank = 16/44
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4.30am, got up had muffin with banana and began sipping endura which I had finished 30min before race start. Woke the family up, my daughter, sister and neice were racing as a team and nephew was racing short course by himself.
Event warmup:

Had a swim at the swim start, water was great temp.
Swim
  • 19m 55s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had one of my best swims today, felt strong, started at the front from the gun, then swam hard first 100m,got into rythm, had someone tapping my feet so found another gear to getaway. Did some drafting on second half, finding it easier to draft now. Turned final buoy and kicked hard all the way in to get some blood into legs, exited water and up stairs, high cadence run to Transition, achilles was sore as this pouint had to run on toes to stop pain.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Had a fast transition, only hold up was getting gels into pouch on tri suit, pockets are too high.
Bike
  • 44m 2s
  • 28 kms
  • 38.15 km/hr
Comments:

Had a good ride, my quickest on this course by a minute, as always got myself together on first lap, not too hard, pushed hard on second and third lap, had a gel at start of second lap, and end of last lap. Pushed really hard on corners today to pick up some positions, worked well. Kept HR around 167, some times got to 170+ but just slowed a little to get it down, threshold at 169. Also used a higher cadence today, seemed to make a big difference.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Has a good T2 nothing to whine about
Run
  • 36m 15s
  • 8.2 kms
  • 04m 25s  min/km
Comments:

Overall happy with time, but need more speed work to get closer to 4min/km pace. 1st lap kept a strong pace, around 18m15s, was running about 10m behind a fellow club member, new he was in good form so stuck with him. Stayed with him for 6km at that point decided it was time to pick it up to finish got HR up to 180 for next 500m, then up to 183 then last km 186 and up to finish. Couldnt catch Darren but passed James who had passed me earlier and is a strong runner in an age group under me, thought he was coming with me so pushed all the way to the line- totally spent at finish.
What would you do differently?:

Best I could do with current fitness, but need more speed work and strengthening!!!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Packing up transition as part of our duties with the club.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training over xmas

Event comments:

Always love this race - being my home town helps. One of my favourite races to date due to racing club members who were in the wave prior to me, creates great spirit and support especially when we are wearing the club tri suit. It is a shame these days have to end, but looking forward to next race in 4 weeks.
