Run
Comments: This was by far the most painful run I've ever done. I didn't think the cold would affect me nearly as much as it did. Even when I slowed down to a pace that I'd normally run with a heart rate around 160, I couldn't get my heart rate to drop below 190. I ended up having to walk a number of times towards the end because I thought I'd either collapse or throw up if I kept going. It was particularly disappointing because I ran a twelve mile training run at a notably faster pace just a week ago - without having to stop to walk. What would you do differently?: Much as I wanted to do this race, running a half marathon sick just wasn't a good idea. If I was going to do it I should have started out much slower and just taken it easy. That way I might have been able to run the entire things. Post race
Warm down: Walked for a few minutes then found the water tent. Ate a granola bar and drank a bunch of water while stretching lightly. I didn't stretch or cool down nearly as much as I should have because I felt absolutely crappy for about half an hour after the race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Illness. Woke up two hours before the race and had coffee, two small bananas, and some peanut butter. Also drank a bunch of water. I still have a cold and I was disappointed to find that I was still coughing up nasty mucus.
Walked about a mile from the parking area to the starting line.
