Subject: My son's Pen Pal from Suriname, South America ...

My oldest boy was asked to write to a Pen Pal in Suriname, South America, because his teacher knew a friend who is teaching over there.

We got the letter back, and the letter is not written in English, but possibly Dutch, which, I guess, maybe the language mostly spoken there.

So, my wife used the website "translation.babylon.com" and tried to have the information translated from Dutch to English.  Well, obviously those translators are not 100% accurate (duh).  The Pen Pal introduces herself (a girl, I know! ) with some additional information, which came out as the following, which I found to be hysterical -

"... I am 11 years old my sidelines rhine wemmen, ringer and fiesten."  HA HA HA HA HA!!!

I can't stop laughing!

That sounds fun, and funny.  But what's the point of writing to a pen pal when the two of them don't know each other's language?

I speak Dutch and can try and translate for you if you post it But it's most likely a dialect, so I might not be able to get all of it...

Online translators often produce hilarious results!

My husband is from Surinam and I have worked there.   I would bet that the letter is written in Dutch and not Sarantango, which is not generally written but only spoken.  Suriname has a very literate, although small, population.  If you want to scan the letter and email it to me for his translation, just PM me.

Dutch has enough english sound to it to sound very funny (to me, at least).   "How are you?" sounds just like "who farted?"

A note about on line translaters:  our admin lady at work was putting up a sign at work for a pot luck on Cinco de Mayo - she wanted it in both English and Spanish.  She "re-translated" cinco de mayo and the sign on the Spanish side says "Cinco de Mayonesa".   I giggle every time I walk by that sign

Let me see if my boy and wife approve of scanning it first.

Derreck, after passing it back to dutch and then to English says that she is saying her hobbies (sidelines) are swimming, singing, and riding her bike.

So - Suriname has a new type of triathlon that replaces the run with karaoke!!! how cool is that?
