Subject: Bridging sprint to Olympic
Trained up & did my 1st tri last month (sprint) & enjoyed it (SLOW swim but made upper half in AG & almost top third OA).  Now looking to go longer- to Oly in Aug.  I'm an avid middle-aged cyclist (5k mi/yr inc several centuries), so bike leg is no prob.  Only been swimming seriously for 5mo, but have progressed to doing 1mi in practice (tired, but not dead after).  My issue is running.  I've run 5k's 2-3x/wk but unfortunately developed Tibialis Anterior Syndrome (form of shin splints- NO tibial stress fracture).  No previous leg/ankle probs. Ortho doc says mild-mod case so no running for 3-4 weeks but can continue biking & swimming.  Less than a week since last run & legs feel fine.  In 3weeks from now I am to resume running easy & rebuild endurance gradually.  HOWEVER- increasing my long run distance by 10%/wk barely gets me to 10k run distance by scheduled Oly date.
Am I being unrealistic to bridge from sprint to Oly in 1st season with this TAS setback, or should I just see how it goes when I get back on the track?

My story is almost identical (first sprint is 4 weeks away, then an oly two months later). I have IT Band issues. My goal it to practice swimming and cycling hard and run as much as I can without hurting myself. I'm taking the approach that as long as the day of the race my knee is in fairly good shape (my goal), I will just push through any issues/pain/fatigue. I'm hoping good swim and bikecardio and times will set me up for a decent run.
Might not be the smartest plan, but I can't think of anything better.
Worst comes to worst you can always walk the 6.2 miles.

Can you do aquajogging?  It's low/no impact and people here have had great success with it.  It might help maintain the running fitness, just a thought.

Never considered aquajogging.  Thanks for the tip. I'll check into it.

I could walk the 10k, but my goal is a finish somewhere MOP.  And without significant injury (or aggravation of injury).  As I understand it- overdoing it with bad shint splints can lead to (or at least "predispose to") stress fracture.

Follow up-

Kept swimming 2-3x/wk up to 2000yds straight.  Started running again in early June.  Did another Sprint in July.  Entered that 1st Oly this month.  Managed race poorly.  Bad rhythm in swim & too many foolish anerobic efforts during bike led to bad leg cramps during very slow painful run.  Still finished in 3:16.
