Subject: Y Freedom Tri in Pearland June 28 question
I am new to triathlon and this will be my 1st tri. It is listed as a dual start pool swim start. I am not sure what this means. I assume it means 2 start at a time, but will those 2 stay in the same lane the entire swim or is it a snake pattern? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It is my understanding this is a snake swim.  This will be my seond tri and first pool swim so I'm a rookie too.

When I've have done a dual swim start, everyone started on the outer lanes, odd numbers on one side and even on the other.  We swam down and up one lane, went under the rope, down and up, under the rope, down and up, and then got out in the middle two lanes.  Hope that makes sense ...

Thanks for that information, the dual start thing didn't make sense to me.  This must be a really big pool!

Thanks for the info!  I was curious about this as well...my next tri (Memorial Hermann Sugarland Tri) is the same day and is also a dual start pool swim.  I was not sure how it worked!

That's the format for this event the last 2 years. And it's a 50 yd pool...

I think it's a 50 meter pool Smile  Which I know will be different for me since I am used to swimming a 25 yard pool.  Less push offs.  Hoping it doesn't fatigue me.

Correct - pool is 50 meters. Not yards as I had stated. I've been looking at various pool info and am getting crossed up on who has meters and who has yards (and trying to determine what they actually have versus state when you ask...)

Also just noticed that they will likely fill up the field as there are less than 50 spots left. So if thinking, better get to registering.

They were going to cap entries at 350, but were able to extend the field limit to 50 more. As of last night they had only 25 of those open. Going to be a fun time

Smaller is better Smile  I chose the Pearland over Sugarland because the field was going to be smaller.  I think the Sugarland one is 500+.

I wasn't planning on doing this one, and haven't been training much due to work, but what the heck, I just nabbed one of the last spots!  It looks like it should be a fun race.  This will be my second tri, and first pool swim.  Hope to see you all there!

Me too!  I am going to try to get out there today to get a feel for a 50m pool.  I plan to pick up my packet next Friday at TOTR.  PM me when you have your # and we can try to meet up!

Sounds great!  I need to get out there and get some swimming in too!  Do you know what the fee is for access to that pool?

I have a city wide Y membership so it won't cost me anything but I'll PM you with the info.

So apparently the shallow end of the pool we're going to be swimming in is on 3ft deep.  I know the lap pool at my gym is pretty shallow, but I'm not sure if it's that shallow.  I'm pretty new to this whole swmming laps and doing flip turns thing, so I was wondering if 3ft is for sure too shallow to do flip turns.  What say you?

Awesome!  It's always great to return to competition after an injury!  Good luck with your triumphant return to glory! Hope to see you out there!Laughing

3ft is normal, but if you don't do flip turns I wouldn't recommend doing them in the race where you also have to go under lane dividers.

I don't do em.

Join a pool and stop complaining about working too much and get the training in!

Oh don't you worry about me, pal, I swim at my gym's lap pool every now and then. Tongue out

Thanks for the tip about not doing flip turns under the dividers.  I was planning on doing it, but I know you know your stuff so I'm going to forget about it and just duck under.

So in a lap pool when you guys train, how do you change direction if not doing flip turns? Do you just touch the side, turn around and head back? Sorry for the dumb question. I'm headed to the lap pool at the gym today to start getting some swim training in.

Hope you guys had a blast today!

It was bloody hot out there and I did this race completely wrong. My swim sucked because that's what I do. I have got to, got to, set up my bike with a longer drinking straw because I did 15 miles without any water. This directly contributed to my worst run time ever even though I caught all those who passed me on the bike...but I got passed by a super tall 54 year old man who's stride was too much to keep up with. This is the 2nd time I've been passed on the run. Overall, I cost myself a lot of time due to hydration and being a horrible swimmer...but I love this sport. The people are great, first class.

I passed a guy on the run who was in my AG and as I passed him I said, "You're in my age group. I must crush you!" We both chuckled. Also, pink top and black shorts...nice pace booty. I almost said that but didn't because she might not know about it on here and didn't want to feel like a pervert for the rest of the day.

Good race day, y'all and hope y'all had as much fun as I did. Time for a sammich and Role Models.

That was a fun race!  I finally got to meet a fellow BT'er in person, too.  Nice to meet you Keri!

So how did everyone do?  I got really lucky and one my AG, but with a little help from the guy who should have come in first, but missed a turn.
