Swim
  • 20h 20m
  • 5000 meters
  • 24m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ran smooth and easy. Tried not to push hard due to having never done a run, bike, run format before. This was also the longest race I have ever entered.
What would you do differently?:

Train at faster run paces. More long intervals and more tempo runs under 7 min pace.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

This was considerably easier than a swim to bike transition.
What would you do differently?:

Get those things so I don't have to tie/untie my shoes. I spent about 20-30 seconds tying shoes.
Bike
  • 1h 14m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

The first two hills were difficult because my drivetrain was skipping in my low gears. It has never done that before, so apparently I bumped it taking it out of the car. Didn't act up on pre-race ride, so who knows. After that I settled in and was able to pass three people riding into the wind.
What would you do differently?:

More hill training (other than on my MTB). More thorough pre-race ride to determine if adjustments need to be made.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Awesome transition.
What would you do differently?:

The shoe tieing thing again. Would have been under 30 if I could have just slipped them on and went.
Run
  • 54m 1s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good until mile 2 where my right quad cramped and rendered my leg unbendable. In two miles of being able to run I had caught two of the people who passed me on the bike. Limped the rest of the way while mixing in short sections of running with long sections of walking. This sucked more than anything should be allowed to suck. At mile four the cramp spread to my entire thigh (hamstring, quad, groin) and pretty much ended my day.
What would you do differently?:

Take in more fluid. Get a fuel belt to make it easier to drink and not rely on aid stations.
Post race
Warm down:

Packed up and headed home with my tail between my legs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, dehydration and no duathlon experience.

Event comments:

When I finished everyone who had finished before me was already gone. There was no post race recap that I saw or if there was, there wasn't anything mentioned about it before the race. Virtually no post race activity. The competition is very good and this seems to be a well established event.
