Total Time = 1h 06m 45s
Overall Rank = 12/380
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 3/22
Pre-race routine:

got up around 0515, took a D, had some oatmeal and water, packed up in the truck, and headed to the race site.
Event warmup:

again, none. I had to go to the bathroom, but the line was out the door, so I didn't end up having time. Again, I took the Immodium, which worked great.
Swim
  • 04m 31s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a great swim! I met my goal.
What would you do differently?:

I would learn how to do flip turns before the next pool event.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

the thing that slowed me the most was the fact that I didn't swim in my tri top, since i had originally planned to change into a warmer shirt, i didn't want to have my wet one underneath. when i arrived at T1, i decided to just wear my tri top afterall, without any warmer shirt over it, so i should have just started out with it on for the swim. this took an extra 30sec to put the tight shirt on.
What would you do differently?:

see above comments
Bike
  • 39m 3s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 21.20 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to go all out, as opposed to pacing myself, but I found that after the race was over, I probably could have gone a little harder on the bike. I need to figure out how to go all out! I passed about 20 people, and only got passed by 2, and one of those I ended up chasing down on the run.
What would you do differently?:

powered through a little harder. still, i beat my goal by a minute.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

It was cold, and I had no manual dexterity to work with my speed laces. i had a little difficulty getting them cinched down as much as I would have liked.
What would you do differently?:

something about my cold hands. i thought it would be warm enough that it wouldn't matter that i didn't wear gloves, but i was clearly wrong.
Run
  • 20m 40s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

felt great. i passed 5-6 people on the run, and was passed by 1...who I chased down and passed at the end of the run...very pleased.
What would you do differently?:

not too much; i felt great.
Post race
Warm down:

tried not to hurl. i stopped running and started eating and drinking fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i wasn't sure i knew how to give 100%, so i think i still had some gas in reserve. i need to learn what it subjectively feels like to leave it all out there on the race course. i think this will come with more experience in racing, and perhaps, more time trials throughout training.

Event comments:

this was a fun little race, and I look forward to maybe being able to do something similar once i move to KY. i'm not sure, but i think overall, i enjoy the testing associated with longer distances; only time will tell, as i have several more international distance races coming up, and i plan to continue more 1/2 iron distances.

Age Group: 2/22
Overall: 26/380
Performance: Good
the start went great, and the logistics of getting that many people in and out of the water went way smoother than I thought it would. I didn't get passed by anyone, and I didn't have to pass anyone. They started us one at a time, based on swim times that we gave them during our registration; they simply lined us up by those, and started one swimmer at a time every 10sec; the race, therefore, was more like a time trial event.

Congratulations on a great race! Your times in all three disciplines are great, it sounds like you managed the race pretty well. Congrats on a top 3 finish as well.
