Pre-race routine:

I was a little apprehensive about this race. I wanted to do well, but I had a pretty big training week and I knew I was fatigued. I tried to chill out the two days prior but all the climbing I did on the bike put me in a little bit of a hole. I heard that the field was deeper this year so I resigned myself to just racing hard and seeing what I could pull off. Stayed in a condo right next to transition, so that made it pretty easy. Had a cup of coffee and cereal like usual. Just before race start had a Clif Shot gel and a Red Bull.
Event warmup:

Warmed up for about 250 meters but that's it
  • 26m 20s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters

Swim went well. Although I thought I was swimming much faster than this. I swam with a tight group going out. Really close and lots of contact, but the pace felt comfortably hard so I was determined to hold my line. Made the first right hand turn and it bunched up really hard at the bouy. Spread out quite a bit on the return. Pace of the group I was in started to slow up so I jumped to the next group of four or five swimmers. Got in there draft and debated pushing up to the front, but when I got out of the draft I realized I wasn't quite recovered from bridging up to them so I just sat in all the way the shore. I felt awesome the whole swim so I was a bit surprised when I stood up at 26:03. Oh well I'm still happy with that time.
What would you do differently?:

Should've went out a little harder and got into a faster group. I think if I had done that I could've pulled another 30-45 seconds off this. PR swim for me though so I really can't complain.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s

Transition went great with one exception. As I was pulling my wetsuit off I ripped one of the straps that goes over my shoulders. Luckily I've dealt with DeSoto before and their customer service rocks. So I won't have my suit back before next weekend's race, but I hope to have it for 5430. I'm also a notorious over packer so I've got swim pants and a Blue Seventy pointZero3 swim skin as well.
What would you do differently?:

Not rip my pants

  • 24.17 mile/hr

Got out of transition and couldn't get my shoe clipped in. Jake and I discussed this the day before and I told him my plan and he said "I don't know man you might get stuff caked into your shoe and not be able to clip in". Should've listened cuz that's exactly what happened. Lost about a minute there. Had to get off and pick garbage out of my shoe. Lesson learned. Listen to Jake. After that the bike went pretty smooth. I had hoped to crack the hour, but I realized it wasn't gonna happen after I realized there was a headwind on the outward leg. All the bike times are slower this year so I'm not too disappointed with my result. Battled with a skinny guy for the first half. I would pass him on the flats and descents and he would pass me on the hills. Everytime he went by I made sure to drop back 3 bike lengths immediately. I noticed he was doing the same. I noticed he went by a bigger guy and I saw this guy get out of the saddle and jump in the draft. Jake saw him too. So when I went by him I said 3 bike lengths man, but he ignored me. Going into the last few miles I dropped both of these guys. I was holding a steady pace so I think they just faded.
What would you do differently?:

Other than the shoe malfunction nothing. Could've went harder on fresher legs though, but it was the fastest bike split in my division so I'm happy.
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s

Happy with T2. Felt like I flew through it.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing. Fastest in division
  • 41m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile

Came out of transition and the first hill is a burner. Crested it and tried to get my rhythm and a fast turnover going. Got a side stitch, which (touch wood) doesn't happen to me often. Pushed through it and it was gone by mile 2. Once I started feeling good I upped the pace and reeled in a guy. Looked at his leg and saw 35 so I thought "When you pass this guy you need to make it hard and swift so he doesn't try to hang". I'm glad I decided to make this move cuz he was in first place at the time. We made the 5k turnaround and right after I drilled it and ran the fastest mile of whole run. Hit the hill leading up to the finish and was hurting. Meg took some pics and I've got pain written all over my face. I'll post them soon.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Given the heat I'm satisfied with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for the award ceremony, but decided to skip it and run out to the 5k point and meet my bro' Linford. He was doing the half iron and it was into the 90's temp wise. So I thought he may need a friend to run with. Also an excuse to get another 10k in for the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Big training block. But that's what I came up for. Overall I'm satisfied with my performance. I'd like to try this distance fresh eventually though.

Event comments:

This is still one of my favorite races. It ranks right up there with the Moab Half-Marathon on my annual "must do" list. The course, location, lake, and race organization are all awesome.
