Subject: What Does Runner's Knee Feel Like?
I have a very annoying pain under my knee cap.  It does not hurt when I run or ride.  It hurt a lot when I swim and when I walk up or down stairs.  The pain is searing pain.  Could this be runner's knee?  It can disappear for weeks on end.  Today it flared up while I was doing house work!   I always knew that house work was bad for me.  It bothered me a bit during the swim of my first tri this summer but not at all in the second one which was only a couple of weeks ago.  If I weight bear on it going up stairs, my leg can almost give way from under me and it hurts - a lot.

I'm not sure if this is runner's knee or not.  If it continues, I'd say see a doctor as it may get worse or never go away.  It may be some sort of tendinitis, but again, I am not sure.  It may also be a bone chip behind your knee as well.  I had something like that many years back, but my knee was in pain all the time and it would give out every few steps.  Good luck!

I did a 5.5 mile run last night, which happens to be my longest run ever! woo!

But my knees are sore?  I know my shoes are a good fit and in good condition, so thats not the issue (although it could be with my form)

More specifically, the knobby bone on the outside of my leg just underneath the kneecap that seems to be sore.

Malgal,

I had a torn Meniscus that acted like you are describing. It was basically a flap that would "catch" sometimes. This is not the symptoms of runners knee. You may want to see a MD.

x2

Definitely have this looked at.  A good friend had a meniscus tear and he rode the Pan-Mass with me (192 miles over 2 days) with zero pain, but he was in agony going up stairs.
