I just moved to the Palatine area.  Anyone know of any routes nearby with a decent shoulder and light traffic?

VCR has some great routes that run very close to you.  check out the routes and pick one up that runs near you.

I don't know if this is too far from you but I'm a big fan of the forest preserve trail over by the skokie lagoons. (Tower road and the I94 expressway.) It's a longer trail. There is a 5mi loop right at tower road and a 12-15mi (I can't remember exactly) out and back. Not a lot of bike/runner traffic and you don't cross that many streets. You ride in the trees mostly so there is no wind. It's where I go when I really want to hammer and do speed work. I know I can go all out and leave nothing in the tank because on the way back I won't die into a head wind.

I don't know when the Harper Ride starts back up but do a search of the route on map my ride and you will find a nice route. If you can do the ride on a Saturday with the group take advantage of it. They ride hard and fast.

From that trail, keep riding north through the Botanic gardens.  When you get to Lake Cook road ride west about a mile till you see a Shell Station.  There is another trail that starts behind that gas station and follows the train tracks about 8 miles.  It's straight and boring, almost no one uses it and there are overpasses over all the busy streets.  You can really hammer it there.

Forgot about that one. I also recommend that path as well.

Try the Poplar Creek loop if you don't mind driving over there. A quiet 9 mile loop with some good straights, good elevation changes, and some hot women.

Google Maps has just added a 'bike route' option.

The maps now include most of the bike paths in the area.
