Subject: Cervelo S2 Soloist or Tri Bike
Hi Folks,

I have been shopping for a tri bike for some time now. I have not pulled the trigger on one just yet. I have noodled between the Cervelo P2C, the Felt B12, the Specialized Transition Expert, and the Trek Equinox 9.5. These are all in the $2500 to $3500 range. I noticed the Cervelo Soloist S2 the other day and I thought what about an S2 with some ITU carbon aero bars and some nice wheels instead of full blow tribike? I also saw Felt has a similar bike called the AR3. The Cervelo and Felt bikes are road bikes with aero tubing.

I am currently riding the standard Dork Rocket configuration with my 2007 LeMond Alpe d'Huez aluminum frame (w/carbon forks and stays), Fast Forward Seat Post, Clip on Vision aero bars, and the stock Bontrager Select wheels. The bike has Ultegra Parts all around. I am wondering if it even makes sense to go to one of the above mentioned bikes.

Any of you go through this issue? What do you recommend? I hate to spend $3000 and be disappointed.

Bill

What's your focus?

Just triathlon?

Triathlon and Road Riding?

What you want to use the bike for should be the deciding factor. If you still want to do group rides/road riding then you'll probably want to consider a road bike that can give you that road geometry.

Hi F1,

thanks for your response. I would use the bike to do triathlons from Sprint to Ironman length. I mainly got on this S2 train of thought due to the hilly courses in the midwest area I live in. We have hills to climb and fast hills to go down. Not to mention the training aspects. The tribike configuration seems like just a racing need and not so much for training.

I am leaning toward a triathlon specific bike since it is different than my road bike. Not sure it is a good idea to have an S2 and a road bike.

Thanks,

Bill

From what it sounds like you should go for the tri bike. Although I can't blame you for drooling over the S2 as I've done the same.
