I have a question for you swimming guru's

Do these times make sense?

I swim 500 yds at 8:07, then after 2 min. rest swam  another 500 yds at 8:12 with a pull buoy(using only arms), then 2 min later swam 500 yds without the buoy at 8:40....

The question I have is, how is it that my time with the pull buoy is about the same as without?

I personally think my erractic kicking is sapping my energy.  the pull buoy may be conserving more of my energy.  I felt freshest after the set with the pull buoy.

I'm not a guru but my times don't differ much with or w/o the bouy. I don't kick much w/o, just enough to position

Coach Ken here from Colorado Springs:

A couple things could be happening here.  Without kicking, you lose propulsion which should slow you down.  However, the buoy may help you stay streamline and horizontal in the water therfore reducing drag and makng you go faster.  Also, if your legs are at rest, you are using much less energy, therefore feeling less fatigue.

Even top swimmers at any level can pull just about as fast as they can swimming(if they have a good pull that is). I know my swimmers can do 1:05's both pulling and swimming with the same heart rate. My heart rate was on avg slightly lower pulling the same time as swimming. But I dont kick with my legs a whole lot. Your legs take more oxygen, so when your pulling, you can pull harder with the same energy use. The pull bouy also helps you stay balanced and upright without using so many muscles.

I go faster without the buoy. I'm nearly certain it's due to the drag effect of the buoy, which slows me down about 5-8sec/100m, as I barely kick even without the buoy and never do kick drills. When I started out, I was faster with the buoy, but as I fixed my position (too awhile), it actually slows me down a bit - I can actually feel the drag of the buoy in the water.

Without watching you swim, it wouldn't be prudent to offer drill advice.  If you have (or could get some) video, I would be happy to take a look.  I would need a walk along shot as well as a head on shot.
