Pre-race routine:

I'm a creature of habit so I do the exact pre-race routine for every race. Kashi frozen dinner and banana. I try to be one of the first to arrive, got there around 5am, set up my bike, body marked etc. and ate another banana.
Event warmup:

Ran a mile and biked around 4 miles. Didn't bother trying to swim
Swim
  • 07m 25s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

The half participants were doing 2 larger laps and were all over the place for the start of our race but it worked out surprisingly well. I only saw one other person from my wave that was up with me and he was too far in front to try to catch his feet so I just got in a good pace and booked it. No issues and had a real good swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

One foot out perfectly, other foot got stuck and took a few extra seconds, overall good
Bike
  • 32m 18s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 23.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Strong tailwind on the way out and didn't really realize this until the turn around, probably should have pushed it more but overall pretty good.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

My place was trashed when I got back, stuff was all over the place, I had to move a bunch of things so I could rack my bike, my shoes were kicked over and not in the right place and it looked like someone had stepped on them so it took me a while to fix the back heel part.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, wasn't really upset, it happens in races and I'm sure I have done it too.
Run
  • 17m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 05m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out of transition at 42:00 and figured I would be trying to go around 1:02:00 with a real good run, but...I hit the turn around and realized if I ran a great second half I could break an hour. I also got to see the second place guy in my age group about 2 minutes behind me and running fast. I tried to pick up the pace and made it to the finish line well under and hour and really happy with my overall race.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat, walked, sat some more, got some lemonade and some great post-race food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Med school

Event comments:

Overall the best I have done in a race!! Also incredibly well done by set-up events and all the volunteers especially considering its in the first year. Congratulations everyone who raced in the sprint and half and thanks to all the volunteers!
