Subject: Hershey Half Marathon - Sunday, October 3rd
I have two buddies that I ran the Marine Corps Historic Half marathon with.  Since we are all former military, the trash talk soon started.  Another friend in our group works at Hershey informed us that 2010 is the inaugural Hershey Half Marathon.  All three of us are registered.  I wanted to point out that registration up to August is around $50.

I told my friend that works there that I would run it but only if I could do so as a Kit Kat costume.  He asked but unless you are an employee, you have to run it as yourself.

Bummer.  Smile

I'm in!  Though I don't eat chocolate...I hope I don't get flogged then dunked in the stuff...If I don't tan this summer, will they not let me race because I'd look like a white chocolate Hershey bar?

Looks interesting; however, the start time for walkers is 7:00 am and the start time for runners is 8:00 am.  That sounds like the runners will end up passing the walkers.  How many people do you think they will get at this race?  Do you think there will be a lot of walkers to pass?

As a former seasonal employee of Hersheypark, I am seriously considering this race.  The tourist area of Hershey is such a happy area.

If you figure that walkers will be roughtly 3 mph and runners roughly 10 mile min, runners won't hit walkers until mile 6.  By then, I think both herds will be thin enough for it not to be a problem.  There are folks who will be much faster and much slower than those averages.

I am going to dress like a baby, get into a stoller and jump out to race starting at mile 6 (after I get a lift from a walker).

Sweet!

I'm going to do it but I'm frustrated with my running due to what seems to be a strain where my achilles connects to my calf.  I did a few slow 3 mile runs last week and thought I was doing OK.  I tried for a 6 miler on Saturday and at mile 4 it felt like something bit me below the calf.  It doesn't bother me on the bike but when I drop my weight on it while running, it's horrible.  I'm giving it a few days off, doing the R.I.C.E thing, and then I'll start attempting the slow, short running again.  Oh well, it gives me more time and reason to bring my biking up to speed.

I hope your injury heals soon!  I'm feeling decent with my running.  I'm usually a slow runner (around 12:30 min/mile), but I've been doing a lot of interval training to gain some speed.  Based on my progress, I am hopeful to run at 10:00 min/mile pace at the race.

My Dad is in, too.  He'll be racing at age 59, not quite old enough for the 60+ age categories.

I booked a room at the Hershey Lodge for Saturday night.  With fees, the room is costing me $94.  I always thought the Lodge & Hershey Hotel were really expensive.  Maybe they still are and gave really discounted rates for the race weekend.  Most of the other hotels in the area are charging over $100 without fees.

Is everyone ready???  I'm glad it's not this weekend.  My legs still hurt from Savageman!

I can't believe I'm saying this but thank goodness this is only a run!

Subject: RE: Hershey Half Marathon - Sunday, October 3rd ROOM UPDATE!!
Did anyone get a room for the Best Western through the Hershey Web site via the Hershey Lodge?  If you did, the Best Western will not have a room for you!  No matter when you made the reservation (we and our neighbors made ours back in late July) the Lodge did not send the info to the Best Western until last Thursday!  By then the Best Western was full and they called some of the people on the list to tell them they don't have a room!!!  Our friends got the call, we did not. I called the BW and they did not have ANYTHING for us nor any record of us!  I told them how we got the room and gave them the "confirmation" number.  They told me they do not give confirmation numbers with letters in them (like ours).  We ended up having to get a room in another hotel just outside of Hershey.

So, if you got a reservation to Best Western in Hershey through the Hershey half web site, call them immediately and find out if you actually have a room even if you have a confirmation number!!!

Oh, and I am ready for it!!  I've been doing 9-10 regularly on hilly trails once a weekend for a few weeks in a row plus many miles during the week.  I can't wait for my first half!

Sorry to hear about your hotel issues Erik.  I don't live that far away so I'm simply driving up that morning.  I did my first half mary back in May.  It was fun but it was pretty tough.  I finished in 2:26!

After that I was doing HIM training for Savageman.  I am hoping that my legs will be fully recovered in time because those hills beat me up.  My goal is to finish <2hrs.  Along with the training, I have lost 15lbs since then so I hope that helps.  My last 10 mile training run shocked me when I finished in 1:36.  If I can repeat that, the adrenaline should get me to the finish by 2:00.  ;-)  I'll consider that a pretty good finish to 2010.

I booked a room at the Hershey Lodge (not the Best Western through the Hershey Lodge).  I booked my room months ago when I first heard about the race.  I've been getting regular e-mails from the Hershey Lodge trying to get me to book golf/massages during my visit, so I am assuming my reservation is valid.

I'm hoping to finish under 2:45.  I haven't been running as much as I should, but I have still be working out regularly, so I shouldn't do too bad.  (I'm normally a slow runner, so I was never expecting anything fast.)

Does anyone know how many registered runners there are?

I searched and I cannot find the number of registered runners.  The folks at Hershey are no strangers to organizing events so I believe this will be a great time.

I read that they capped it at 2,500 runners/walkers/relay teams for the first year.

They posted a video of the route on the site...I'm getting excited.  I'm shooting for 2:05 (current PR is 2:09 and change).

I spoke to a lady here at work who is doing it.  She missed the registration so she said she is going to run to mile 12 and bail.  She said it will become a 12 mile training run for her next marathon.

FYI, the local radio station said it should be in the low 60's for the run.  There goes my thong idea.
