Subject: Newbie Bike Routes in San Antonio?
Hi guys, can someone point me to some bike routes in San Antonio that are "safer" for beginners?  I know that's kind of vague but I'm new to the training and due to the heat will be doing many of my bike rides before 7am.  I guess my question is--is it safe to ride by myself that early?  I don't typically run before work b/c I had a scare w/a car following me so I'm worried about being on the bike as well.  Any advice would be great!

Where in San Antonio are you? the area is pretty big. I just moved down here two weeks ago for the summer and have found a couple of good roads up around the UTSA area.

I'm off of 1604 & O'Connor Rd so I guess that's NE San Antonio.  I don't mind driving somewhere as I'm still an inexperienced rider and don't want to ride in high traffic areas.  My neighborhood has several busy streets and no shoulder so I'm still pretty nervous out there!

You might try hooking up with this group.  They have a number of organized rides around the city including one that starts in Cibolo and the semi-famous "Woman Hollering Creek" ride that takes of from Judson HS

Ride Away Bikes on Redland and 1604 do a Saturday morning ride; 30 miles at about 16 mph. Ride leaves from the parking lot at 8 am.  Trisition Area at 1604 and Bitters also does several group rides during the week, in addition to bricks on Sunday and a swim, ride, run on Saturday morning at Boerne Lake.

Sarah, I too live in the same area i ride through longs creek to corrian springs then down to oconner and take a fast sprint too 1604 ( its very wide lane there on oconner till you hit 1604. from there i ride the acess road all the way down to the turnaround past green mountain. and the same route back. if i want ot add milage i will go upto rideaway bikes at redland if traffic isn't too bad. This route has plenty of crossovers to adjust the ride length and traffic is not too bad just be alert at intersections. The shoulders are wide and moslty free of debris and most of the traffic stays on the highway. The hills are great for getting  training in and it's not uncommon to run into other bikers along the way. Take spare tires because it's a long walk from some points to the next rest stop.

I have several ride maps w/ elevation that i have logged with my iphone/gps that i would be happy to share if you like. Just drop me a PM.

And if you are feeling particlarly brave, classen road from bulverde to knoll creek WILL make your legs burn =)

Moxie,

Time change goes into effect on 16 June, so the new start time for the Boerne Lake training is 7 am. The Sunday morning brick times are now 7 am also.

It will vary depending on the weekend. On Sunday there is the Tri It In Spanish race out in New Braunfels, which is sponsored by Tri-Sition Area so that could impact this weekends participation. I believe the swim distances are a mile (across the lake and back) and a half mile (point to point), they have a map on the website which shows the actual distances. I would recommend you give them a call, some the people meet at the shop before the training and head out to the lake as a group. Might be easier if you have never been to Boerne Lake before.

How do I get to Lake from Fair Oaks Ranch.  I know how to get to Boerne and I am wondering where to meet at the lake.  It was suggested I call them. Who do I call?  Also do you guys know of a good area with trails to run around the Boerne Area.

I did the open water swim this morning at Lake Boerne.  The water compared to Florida was great.  For one no alligators, and number two it was very clean.  I really appreciated the fact they had a couple Kayaks in the middle in case someone got it to trouble.  A local tri shop Tri-Sition was there with the kayak.  Typically we swim in Orlando about the same distance as this swim ours .62 over and .62 back and this was about a mile.  Both were great and I was able to get some info on places to run while I am here.  Thanks Texas.
