I use the alphabet to keep track. H = 400MR = 800MA-Z then A-F = 1600for each 50 meters pick a name and repeat in your head while you swim that lap. Odd sing-song names work well.

ETA:  After I had been swimming a while and more or less found my different paces I mostly rely on the clock to tell me.

32 Minutes = 1600M Hard Effort
35 Minutes = 1600M Easy Effort
etc...

Why can't I count laps?

Because you're ADD like the rest of us?

I chunk my sets.
For example, my standard 500 is broken down to...
100 Free + 50 Back + 100 Free + 50 Breast + 100 Free + either 100 IM or 100 Sprint.

It don't need to remember much, and then I can remember my 500's. (or look at the clock and divide by my average 50 pace.)

axteraa - 2010-07-27 5:56 AM I count by 100s and confirm it by time.  My pool has a big digital clock on the wall displaying the time of day.  After each 100, I take a peak at it and confirm the elapsed time since the last 100.  I know within a few seconds what my pace/100 should be so before I take the peak I've already calculated what time I expect to see - if it's right, I know I'm good.

X2  and if the lane ropes have enough slack I use the rings like an abacus.

and I ran - 2010-07-26 6:31 PM I use my garmin. I have it at the end of the lane and hit the lap button every 100, if my 100 lap time is off then I know I screwed up.

I use my 310xt in "swim mode".

It's off by about 10%, but that's close enough for me for a pool workout, and requires zero thought or effort.

Just hit "stop" at the end of your workout, and it gives you the distance.

Another vote for the finger lap counter thing. Love mine.

I use the finger lap counter too.  It's priceless for longer sets.  I can do 6x100 and keep track with no problem, but tell me to swim 500 and I can easily be off by 100!  I've got issues. The lap counter works great, is easy to hit with one hand and can be read with aging eyes through swim goggles.
