Subject: Recomend a good half IM at end of 2011
I've been reading through the race reports but can't seem to find a good half IM (doesn't have to be IM) to do in either Sep, Oct, Nov, or Dec of 2011.

I originally intended to just do a couple of Oly distance triathlons next year and save the half for 2012, but my half IM training plan is going well and I think if I continue doing what I am doing I should be able to do the half without much of a problem.

Because it would be my first half, I would prefer a relatively 'easy' course. No huge currents in the swim, no massive hills or mountains to bike or run across.

Location isn't a big deal to me. Preferably on the west coast. But as long as it is in the US or Mexico, I would be happy to make a vacation of it.

Any suggestions?

couple of choices:  miami 70.3 october 30th; miami man nov 14th

seriously though miami 70.3 was a complete disaster this year but i think everything will be fixed for next year.

Your problem is living on the West coast and looking for easy.    How about SOMA in Tempe, AZ.  It's a flat course, and the swim should be pretty calm.  Not too much of a travel from CA.  The odds of the dam bursting two years in a row are pretty slim I'd think....

Atlantic Coast Half is at Fernandina Beach in Florida (Amelia Island) in October.  The Ameliaman Olympic race runs at the same time.  Ocean swim, flat bike, gently rollling run through a beautiful park.   And, at the beach.  At the beach is way better than not-the-beach.  Tons of places to stay on Amelia or your can stay in Jacksonville and drive up.

I did 70.3 Austin this year as my first HIM.  Great course!!!  I am a weak biker at it wasn't too difficult.  It will be hot on the run, but not as bad as Soma.  (I live in AZ.)

Black Diamond Tri in Enumclaw, Wa is on the last weekend in September. I did it 2 years ago. It's a nice, low key race.

Here are two options for you that are almost local for you.
Mid August you have this one.  It is the first year for this distance but te organizers have been doing Oly's in the same venue for a while.  Well organized and the course is pretty much flat.  (this is a bit shorter than a real HIM, 1S/56B/9R)

Also, August 27 you have this one:

the bike has rolling hills and the run is almost flat

The TBF Racing put on very nice races. The only problem with it is that the Sacramento area in late August is like downtown Hell heatwise.

Thanks a lot everyone for all of the suggestions. It has been extremely helpful to go through each race and review the race reports. I think I narrowed it down to 3 choices for now.

1) Rev3 Cedar Point - seems very friendly and nice, I also love roller coasters
2) Big Kahuna Tri - Santa Cruz, CA - very close to me
3) Miami Man - seems like a nice and relaxed course, plus running through the zoo seems like a blast.

I'll discuss with the wife where she might want to take a vacation, if we can't decide I'll just go the Santa Cruz route. I'll make sure to check in on this thread for future races. A lot of them seem really fun.
