The sign-ups for the CB&I Sprint Tri in The Woodlands opened this morning. Last year this race filled up very quickly. I expect it'll be even faster this year, since so many IM participants will be interested in the swim in Lake Woodlands. I put a link to the race page below.

http://www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/index.aspx?NID=306

This is a great race, especially for first timers......it's VERY well organized, and the corse is pretty mild and fast......no hills on anything and usually no wind to speak of.

I took a look this morning, and it's sold out. I know several people who made it in last year off the waiting list, but I'm not exactly sure how that works.

Generally speaking it is packet resale.  Last packet pick up is usually the day before the race until 5 or 6 pm.  After that time the packets that have not been picked up can be resold so you would need to be there when this happens.  There are always packets that are not picked up because of injury, illness or several other reasons so your chances of getting a packet are really good but it comes with a price, generally a bit more than regular registration.  Since you live in The Woodlands you wouldn't be going too far to get your packet so this might work for you.  Good luck!

You sure it's sold out?  Looks like the registration link is still active, I was just now able to get all the way to the credit card info (not sure I'm going to be in town so not ready to register just yet)

Sorry for the false alarm. I was looking at a note on the web site, but it's a left over from 2010. Should have read it a little closer!

I heard last year everyone in line got a packet. Resale started late, ~8:00, since they had to get the packets from the original pick-up locations to the race site.

I'm In too.  Third year in a row.  Great race, well organized, and the after race food/activities have gotten better.

Different director this year as Willie now works with Onurmark Productions & R&B Sports. I'm sure the new staff will put on a great race as well, I mean heck it's The Woodlands, can't go wrong right?

FYI the portion of the swim they use is a spec of the IM course and basically all Texas swims are the same.... dark, warm, merky water. Is there anything else in Texas? haha

Texas State Sprint Triathlon would be the exception

It would be great if we could work a race around Lake 288, best water we have in these parts.

Parking would eat up transition space or other way around. Biggest thing though is it's not a good place to bike. Have you seen the area around there? It's sad that people live in those conditions. I doubt that anyone would want to ride and run around that area (outside of the lake complex.) I agree about the water but the placement of the lake is not suitable for a good triathlon. However Onurmark will be hosting splash and dashes there next year. Probably starting in mid April after Gateway. Maybe one before Gateway. Stay tuned...

Oh trust me I know!  I've come in the back way from Friendswood on bike and been chased by pit bulls coming down the bumpy road leading to the lake.  NOT a good time!  Just wish it was an option is all.

I just signed up today (the 18th) and it is still OPEN! Yeah! This is my first triathlon and I'm nervous, but excited.

My biggest question: what do you wear?? Particularly to this one. And,do you wear the same thing in the water as you do while biking/running?

Thanks!

Tri shorts & tri top or a tri suit.  You wear the same thing the whole race.

CB&I should be wetsuit legal too. Seeing as how it's your first one I would recommend it. Most people don't on the swim at CB&I because it's short and barely wetsuit legal. I'm a decent swimmer and can get my suit off in under 10 seconds while I'm putting on my helmet and glasses so I wear it, every little bit helps. Remember a wetsuit's biggest advantage is that it helps you float. For a beginner that's huge. Gives you one less thing to worry about out there and conserves energy.

You could always signup to volunteer at our race, Gateway to the Bay, www.Gatewaytothebay.com. Volunteering at a triathlon is a great way to really learn the ins and outs. Should help with your race at CB&I. Plus if you're lucky you can pick the brain of our Sponsorship Coordinator, Willie, who was the race director of CB&I for 7 years.

Great idea to volunteer at one first. Thanks!

And, if I do wear a wetsuit, what do I wear under it to ride & run in? Thanks again!

GMAN was correct in saying either a tri suit (1-piece) or a tri top and tri shorts (2-piece). Tri specific gear is tight (don't buy it loose) and has as little drag in the water as possible. It's made out of fabric that dries quick and the pad that's in the shorts is not as thick as bike shorts that way it doesn't annoy you on the run and stay wet forever. You can order tri gear online but the best way to do it is to go into a store like Luke's and just try some on to make sure it fits and buy it there to support our local shops. If you're part of a tri/run group I think you get a discount too.

No idea. CB&I has a brand new race director this year so who knows what's going to happen. Willie (former CB&I race director) came over to be our Assistant RD & Sponsorship Coordinator for Kemah (Gateway), Bridgeland, & Houston. CB&I is most likely about half full at this point. Last I heard they had about 500. Hopefully it is as well put on as it used to be.

I know some who are passing this year because it is so close to IMTX.  That is the last big weekend of training for most so the race would get in the way.

Thanks! Good to know I have a little more time left. Lonestar HIM continues to drain my account. I really hope the new CB&I RD is good, the last two years I've done the race have been awesome.
