Age Group Rank = 41/47
Pre-race routine:

Set up transiiton, visited with my BT friends, met Michael Pate.
Event warmup:

nada
Swim
  • 20m 55s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt good, and beat my pace fromt he last race. But my sighting STUNK and I got WAY off to the left of the buoys....added a significant extra distance for myself. Mixed in too much breaststroke, but overall a decent swim.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn to freestyle more, and sight better!
Transition 1
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

No idea what happened here, but nothing "clicked" today. Struggled with my socks and my bike shoes, struggled with my Camelbak, couldn't get my Carb Boom in my pocket, etc, etc. Just a basic disaster
What would you do differently?:

Just about everything, but oh well
Bike
  • 1h 02m 45s
  • 18.2 miles
  • 17.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Really enjoyed this bike course. The Sports Spectrum folks definitely know how to put a course together well.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, other than continue to follow Guru Bear's advice and "Ride Lots" so that I can increase my bike speed and power.
Transition 2
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

Better transition, and it would have been even better had I not tried to turn right when I got into transition...one of the volunteers politely instructed me that I had to run down to the end and back up the other side to get to my rack...which was only two racks away from the entrance had I been able to go the way I wanted to!! The mess-up cost me a little time, but that's ok.
What would you do differently?:

Not much...go the right way in the first place, or run over the volunteer and rack my bike like I wanted to!!
Run
  • 36m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was good for me, and again, I improved my pace over TriAmerica. I did feel a little weak starting out, and it took a while to get moving, but once I did, I set into a decent pace. Obviously I need to keep running and get faster, but I did ok, and had no problems with the knee. I was a little disappointed that the second water stop had run out of water by the time I got there...a little demoralizing, but what can you do? The trail run was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Run lots and lots and lots and lots so I can get faster. Or tie a rope to the 12 year old girl that passed me like I was standing still, and let her drag me to the finish.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just being a beginner and needing more training and experience

Event comments:

This was a super race....totally first class and well-organized, from packet pick-up, to fantastic swag, to a great set-up and challenging fun course. It was just a total blast to do.

Fellow BTers, I enjoyed getting to know all of you. You are a first class group of people, and I can't wait to see all of you again!

Course: This bike course was extremely fun, and a pretty tough challenge, at least from miles 4-8, and just before mile 10. It was 50% longer than the course at TriAmerica, and a lot more hilly, but I managed to maintain a better pace, and passed several people. I was pleased with my overall performance.

GREAT race....what a blast, and I really enjoyed meeting all my BT friends!  Details will follow later, but I have to catch a plane home right now.  I did improve my pace in all three disciplines over my last race, so I'm excited.  Transition is another story, but I'll take the overall improvement!

Hooray! It sounds like you had a great race! It must be SO satisfying to see your pace increasing in all three disciplines, especially on that more-challening bike course. Isn't it just the coolest that this "training" stuff actually works?

Congrats, OldAg. You had a heck of a race. Sorry I couldn't spend more time with the BT'ers; had to do T3--find the freakin' family.
