wow.... 83.7 current surface water temp. even if it stayed at that temp, i'd be afraid of overheating. Time to invest in a one piece suit.

The water was about perfect temp for me around 83 deg. with about 1-2 foot of visibility. The bike course has more rolling hills then I remember from when I did my Olympic distance two years ago. It has one nice climb near the bottle exchange. The run has one long hill but not to steep.

I tested the course yesterday, the hills are not that big, except one in Catawba, -- but there are so many!!!

The highest point on the course is actually along Old Columbus Road, but it's a long gently rolling climb to get there, so you don't really realize it.

The good (and bad) about the hill is it's right near the end.  So either you push up and over it knowing you're almost there (unless you're doing the half, then you get to do it all over again), or it completely knocks the wind out of your sails if you're not ready for it.

It's not a bad hill though.

my feelings tell me something different, but you are right.

I am thinking to wet the suite or not to wet?

I don't worry about water temperature, but I think it is easier to swim in the suite...

Are you running?

I'm doing the Olympic.  It might be wetsuit legal on Sunday, we'll see.  I haven't decide if I'll wear mine or not yet if it is legal.

So how is everyone feeling? My body feels rested but my legs feel soar and tight. I am guessing from the lack of miles.

I don't know what to expect, or did I have enough training. It's too late anyway to start doing something about it. I have planned one short bike ride for tomorrow and one short run for Saturday morning.

What is everyones nutrition plan? I hate to carry 3 bottles on the bike but I know if I want a chance at having a good race I need to bring my own stuff. My plan is 3 bottles of EFS drink mix plus one bottle of EFS liquid shot. Around 250 cal an hour. Then one bottle of EFS liquid shot for the run.

If you are doing this half/others, you';d be well served off learning to live off the course. I understand this does not work for everyone, but if you can, it's a good way to cut out a lot of worries and this course offers a solid number of bottle exchanges.

As an example, the last few times i've done a race like this, I take what i consider the min of cal with me on the bike (6 gels for 600 total cal or around 250 per hour). outside of that start wit ha bottle of sports drink for another 100-200 cal. outside of that switch up at aid stations and you are good. in this race of the half you have a bottle switch half way through each lap, and at the turn around as well.

if you simple cannot stomach the HEED, i'd still look at carrying you gel/bars and switch up just water as you go.

I'm just doing the mini. But when I did half's in the past I started with my aero-bottle and 2 water bottles on the bike filled with a mix of carbs & protein (7:1) of my own mix. 250 calories in each.

My plan was to sip them evenly throughout the 56 miles, which I typically was able to do.

I'd also carry electrolyte pills (Endurolytes) on the bike and take them depending on the heat/humidity.

On the run I'd take 5oz flask of hammergel, and gulp some right before a water stop when I could stomach it.

It was a hassle taking all my own stuff, but I wanted to use the same nutrition I'd trained on. ("Nothing new on race day.")

Good luck.

Had a bad month as far as training mileage goes.  The last 3 weeks I've not done much of anything.  2 of those were due to work related issues, the last was just general laziness.  So, I'm hoping to turn this race into my inspiration to get my butt in gear for a half marathon in September and my first HIM in October.  Maybe it will pay off like an extended taper!

Be advised they just very recently chip/sealed part of Neer Road west of Catawba, so there may be some places with loose gravel, etc. that could make handling a little dicey through there on a couple of the curves.  Nothing too dangerous or scary, but a little bit of a rough surface for that one bit.  The rest of the roads are in fairly decent shape, especially Old Columbus.

Good luck everyone. I am doing the Sprint. My first Tri in over 2 yrs. I will be wearing my BT shirt and a slightly confused, frightened look. So if you see me a tall-ish, chubby-ish woman, Blue Javlin Tri-bike and BT shirt. Say Hey
