Sunny
Total Time = 1h 56m 33s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 20/21
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep very well. Up from 1:45-4am tossing and turning. Finally woke up for good at 5:10 and started getting ready. Had a pop tart, some gatorade G2, and water. Loaded up and headed to the event at 6:30.
Event warmup:

Some light stretching.
Swim
  • 08m 6s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a seeded "time trial" type of start. I entered 9 minutes for my time and came in under that. I felt like I had a really good swim overall. I did get slowed down on one length waiting for a chance to pass the person in front of me. Other than that, I think I passed 4-6 people and wasn't passed by anyone myself.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Beat my time I had in my head and felt pretty good.
Transition 1
  • 04m 10s
Comments:

Boy, this needs work. This is my first Swim to Bike transition, so I hadn't ever had to deal with being wet, drying feet, etc. I probably wasted a minute to 90 seconds messing around here.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster and have more of a "plan" with the order of things.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 32s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 14.90 mile/hr
Comments:

This hilly course is pretty rough in spots for me. The long uphills really take their toll. But being able to hit 30+mph on the descents is wonderful. I felt pretty good through the ride and probably got passed 2-3 times more than I passed others.
What would you do differently?:

I always need more hill training :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Felt good about this transition time. I didn't really expect to be much faster. Again, this is the first time I've done a sprint in the "regular" order, so it was a new experience. I DID cramp up pretty bad in both calves and was hobbling trying to get going though.
What would you do differently?:

Not cramp. I felt like I spun easy the last mile or so of the bike leg, so maybe it's a nutrition issue.
Run
  • 40m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Terrible run. Just terrible. I cramped getting out of transition in both calves, so my start was weak. Then, the course is just brutal. The first mile or so is uphill, with about half of that being uphill in the sand. UGH! I ended up having to trudge/walk up part of that. Running downhill in the sand really wasn't a lot faster for me, either. Then, the finish is mildly uphill the remaining 3/4 of a mile as well. My target was a sub-11min/mile pace and I fell well short of that.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Just soldier on I guess.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around, hit the restroom, and ate a banana. Then packed up and headed home.

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race and trisportcoaching.com did a pretty good job overall. They even bought 70 pizzas, plus had other food for after! The volunteers and cops at the intersections were all wonderful.

Great job! The courses in Rio Rancho are always tough with those hills. On the cramping, did you do any gels or take in any salt before or during the race?

Thanks!

I didn't do any gels or anything of the sort. My next race, I'm considering adding that in (I've got a pretty picky stomach as it is, though). All I had was some Gatorade G2 and water during the race.
