Subject: Very Heavy Rider breaking bikes

I'm around 340 pounds and I was trying to make the transition from indoor exercise bikes to outdoors on a real bicycle.

Borrowed my brother's cheap mountain bike he never used and 2 rides for 2-3 miles and a few bumps later and I'd bent the wheels beyond the ability to ride.

Should I go back indoors on exercise bikes until I lose more weight?

Any suggestions for a good bike to ride around the neighborhood for general fitness for a man my size?   If not, realistically, how much can I weigh and expect to find a bike that doesn't collapse the first time I hit a bump?

Low end bikes don't hold up well. Big difference between $250 Walmart mountain bike and a main brand mountain bike that may cost 3x+ more.

Go to your local bike shop or two or three and talk with them.

Hang with it...riding outside is lots more fun than inside and easier to go longer, explore and if you want to drop some weight.

Keep at it and good luck!

+1 , and when you talk to them make sure the wheels on the bike you are getting are built for clydesdales. They should have a weight rating on them. Some of the REALLY high end bikes have wheels build for riders 175lbs and less.

Go name brand!  I'm a big guy, you can get a good deal on a bike, then just make sure you have some strong wheels.  They make cheap to Crazy expensive wheels for us big guys.  I have Mavic open road wheels(well under a $100) and used Zipp 808 MAX wheels for my HIM two weeks ago.  Keep it up buddy!!!
