Went down to Sunken Meadow this morning around 6:45am for an ows with a pretty decent sized group (10+). After about 20 minutes, we were all ordered out of the water. I didn't see who was calling the swimmers out, but I was told it was NYS police and that noone could enter the water before lifeguards came on duty. Anyone ever have similar troubles there? I'd hate to lose such a great spot for early morning swims.

I guess  they had nothing more pressing to deal with other than harrassing triathletes in the morning, Troopers are just wonderful.. Bring Donuts next time,

I was down there a bunch of times last year. No problems in the AM, and in the evening when the lifeguards went off duty they told everyone to get out of the water. But as soon as they left, everyone jumped back in.

Rumor has it there is a new supervisor for the state parks and he's really cracking down on the early morning swimmers. Some friends of mine were swimming last week and this weekend and were told to get out of the water and threatened with tickets if they got back in before lifeguards were on duty. They also said Hecksher is on the hit list for increased patrol/supervision.

While I hate to see us lose open water options early in the morning I can understand the concern. I know we all take every precaution while open water swimming, but you just never know.

My wife went down to Sunken Meadow and asked if the State Police were kicking people out. She was told that there is no swimming without lifeguards on duty. Lifeguards go on duty at 9:45.

It wouldn't have been NYSP, it would have been Park Police.

Probably why you're not in law enforcement.  You need to have attention to detail.

Maybe that's why his wife isn't in law enforcement - you know - all that attention to detail.  Wink

Crab Meadow in Northport may be a viable alternative. was thinking of starting a.m. swims there soon.

Any charge to get into Crab Meadow? I am a Smithtown resident, and have the state park pass.

I swam this week in the evening in Heckscher twice (for 40 minutes probably), was not disturbed by anyone.

I'd totally be interested in setting up some early morning swims at Crab Meadow. If anything gets off the ground, please let me know.
