Subject: Cannondale Synapse Carbon vs. Cervelo R3?

Hi everyone--

So the upshot of my bike accident in May is both a trashed bike and having to wear a walking cast for a month. Sigh. Frustrating, but it could have been *so* much worse.

In an effort to cheer myself up after the doctor's appointment today, I drove up to my LBS to chat with the fab folk there about a replacement bike. (I had a 2010 Cannondale Synapse 5 alloy.) The carbon Synapse seems to be a really smart upgrade from the alloy I had for not too much cash ($1800); the other alternative would be a Cervelo R3 for $2600. Any thoughts, ideas, reviews? While $800 is a lot of difference, it might be worth it if the Cervelo would be a better bike in the long run... What think you, O Bike Gurus?

Thanks for any feedback you have!

Alex

First I would make sure that Cervelo R3 fits you. The Cannondale Synapse has a more relexed geometry (Taller head tube for example). The Cervelo RS is much closer in geometry to the Synapse then the R3.

I have a Cervelo RS by the way. I think it is a great riding bike. May want to check out the review at TriSport.com

They did a review on the R3 as well.

I'd just like to add a comment regarding the differences.  Unless you are looking to switch to a more aggressive race geometry (R3 or S2), I would stick with the Synapse.  Like another poster stated, the RS would be more in line, geometry-wise, with what you're currently riding.  My current bike is a Carbon Synapse 3 (the women's version).  I switched to this bike from a Cervelo S2.  While it was an awesome and fast bike, the S2 was just way too "racey" for me and my problematic lower back.  I just couldn't handle the ultra-low, aero body position...my back is much happier on the Synapse.  But...if you have no back issues, and are looking to move to something racier...the R3 is a nice choice...as is the C'Dale Super Six.

Thanks! Looking at the review, I'm pretty sure it was the RS he showed me, in fact-- makes sense, since the R3 has different geometry and he was specific that the Cervelo in question has a similar geometry to the Synapse. Most useful-- thanks again!

I picked up a carbon Synapse from a buddy for sweet price & planned to part it out.  But it rode so nice I've kept it. It's become my fav bike for long group rides.  Not as sharp handling as my Tarmac, but every bit as stiff on acceleration.  At least in my size, geo looks very close to RS.  Both carbon Synapse & RS have been raced by pro teams at highest level (e.g. Paris-Roubaix), for whatever that's worth.  Both are great bikes.  At least at list price for similar Rival spec the price difference is only ~$100. IMHO- Can't go wrong either way. (The $1800 list Synapse has Apex).
