Subject: Moving to NJ - Looking for Long ride routes

Hi, I will be relocating from GA to NJ in about 3 weeks and would like to hear about places where Triathlete's ride / train.  Looking for good long ride routes (60-120 miles), as well as good mid week ride routes (20-50 miles).  Most likely my temp living will be in the New Brunswick area so ideally looking in that area, but a drive to get to the better long ride routes is ok.  Are there any rails to trails routes which will work with a tri bike?  I'm racing Kona in October so the rides will start to get long here in about a month and don't want to end up with a lot of "junk miles" (too many traffic lights / heavey traffic, etc.) trying to find suitable riding routes.

Any help you guys can provide will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the area!  I live right down the road from New Brunswick and the traffic in this area is wicked.  I don't want to discourage you but you are likely going to have to drive somewhere to ride (or live on your computrainer).

Check out these links as they are two really active tri groups sort of near by:

And for the bike scene check out the princeton free wheelers

And last but not least; the best LBS around is in south brunswick:  www.halterscycles.com

I am certainly not at your level; but when you get into town give me a shout if you need anything (and yes Jersey is as bad as everyone tells you it is).

New Brunswick is not too far from the Long Valley, Califon, Bedminster area...lots of bike friendly roads in the area and fairly challenging due to the hills involved. Welcome!!!

I'll second Kago's Bedminster/etc. recommendation. Gets very nice once you head west. New Brunswick is very congested.

You can always hook up with a cycling club to get familiar with the good roads, and then venture out on your own.

Some clubs/shops:
morris area freewheelers - mafw.org
high gear cyclery
martys reliable bike shop
princeton freewheelers

I'm in North Jersey and my long rides generally head north into NYState/Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain.  I also do a fair share of riding in Cape May and Ocean counties along the shore.

If you fine yourself in those areas hit me up!

You can also head out a bit west of you to Hunterdon County NJ or Mercer County. There are a lot of long open farm roads with some nice climbs. You can ride for hours without any real traffic issues.

Here's a century route I did last summer, as recorded by my Garmin.

Jersey is great for biking.
