Sunny
Total Time = 5h 15m 3s
Overall Rank = 307/1836
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 42/253
Pre-race routine:

Arrive at 5am as recommended - wait for 4 hrs for wave. whoa, lots of time to wait and get nervous.
Swim
  • 44m 44s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

aweful swim - felt fine as far as effort entire race but could not find good feet to draft off of and I was all over the place on the way in trying to navigate - the sun glare was so bad - I could not see 5 feet in front of me. zig zag trying to get lined up in swim exit.
What would you do differently?:

go out faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
What would you do differently?:

nothing - good transition
Bike
  • 2h 46m 6s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Drank 20 more ounces of planned fluids - wind and heat really sucked the fluids out of me. 20-24 ounces and 250 calories per hour consumed.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder on bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Did not waste time in transitions. Really pressed hard to maked time in T1/T2 - wish they ranked these.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 1h 41m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The guy in my AG that finished 6 seconds behind me really helped push me the last 2.5 miles as every climb, I heard him come up on my shoulder. with 2 to go he asked if I was going to let me pass him: my 1 word answer - no. With a mile to go, he said lets work together to push hard - I agreed - in finishers chute with 100m to go, I out sprinted him. Almost got the sub 5:15. HOT run really hurt a lot of people and slowed us late wave starters down (last wave was ours at 9am). I can run 10 minutes faster in cooler temps.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on miles 6-7-8. I saved a lot for miles 10-13 but think I had another 30-60seconds lower time in me.
Post race
Warm down:

a bag of ice in front and back of tri suit. head dunked in ice water helped get core temp down - I was melting.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat was a factor for a half mary start time of 1230pm!!!

Event comments:

I love the half distance. Will continue to work on swim speed and bike force/speed.

Congrats on a great race! I agree that the sun made it impossible to navigate back in on the swim. That was pretty rough. I'm in your AG, but went off 5 minutes before you in the A-L wave. The late start definitely played a part in the run times with the heat. Great time!

Great work Bobby. Interested to hear why you think you should have pushed harder on the bike? I think bike pacing is really hard because a tough run will undo a fast bike pretty quick but an average bike and fast run looks like the ticket to PR.

A half iron in July is a man's race. Way to go. I agree I think 70.3 suits you the best... now the real question what's next? Are you setting the stage to go to IMKY with Brandon????
