Total Time = 1h 06m 4s
Overall Rank = 7/1400
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 3/95
Pre-race routine:

Out of bed at 4am for a banana and oatmeal. Sipped on some gatorade and got on the road about 4:30, arriving at bridgeland a little after 5. Got set up, hit the bathroom 4x and socialized a bit.
Event warmup:

I fit in about a 1mi run with some pickups and then walked down to the swim start. I only swam about 200 yards, but I made it fairly hard.
Swim
  • 08m 48s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim. My effort was pretty good, but my goggles fogged up and I struggled with navigation. After the last buoy, I couldn't see the finish at all and got pretty far off course. I also ran into quite a few people who were treading water from the previous waves, so it was difficult to really find a groove.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to "fog-proof" my goggles. Find someone to draft off.
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Pretty bad transition. I chose not to have my shoes clipped in already due to the expected congestion, but this definitely slowed me down a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Practice flying mounts.
Bike
  • 31m 11s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 25.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed fairly hard on the bike, knowing that my run fitness wasn't great and that I needed to make up time on the bike. The course wasn't overly crowded, but there were a lot of people who don't understand the concept of staying to the right hand side of the lane. I kept the pressure on all the way through and overall executed very well despite a lower than expected power output.
What would you do differently?:

Dig deeper.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

The finish came up on me sooner than I expected and I hadn't gotten out of my shoes yet. I chose just to run with them, which probably cost me a few seconds. Overall not a bad transition though.
Run
  • 24m
  • 3.65 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hurting on the run, but I just kept moving. Pace was slow, but I didn't know where I was relative to the field, so I tried to push. This felt a lot longer than it was, probably because in my mind I went into it expecting it to be like a 5k.
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep doing some interval runs and overall spending more time out running.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice bath and then a light jog to go find Analise and cheer her on.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Execution was okay, but my biggest limiter was run fitness. I finished 4s behind 2nd place, and I know I had more than that left in my body, so I'm disappointed for not digging deeper. I could easily have cut 10-15s out of transitions.

Event comments:

Very good race and well organized. Great for beginners. My only complaint is that the timing was completely screwed up and I believe some of the placings here affected. Of course this is Houston, so I'm used to it, but eventually someone is going to figure out how to do timing properly.

Dude I ran headlong into a few people treading water.  It was somewhat crazy out there on the swim.

Looks like your swim has improved even since Sylvan, I guess TJ has done well.

Looking at the results I don't see how it is possible the guy listed in first had that time.  How do you get a Bike time but not a Run time if you cross the finish line?

Nothing agaisnt them personally but it looks more like a DNF than a race winner.

The time in the pool has definitely payed off.

I feel very strongly that I actually had 1st or 2nd place in the AG.  If you add up the splits for the guy who finished second, you'll see he was well behind me.  The guy in first would have had to swim incredibly fast.  I work with the guy who got the 2nd fastest swim split in the AG, and when I passed him on the bike, he was sure there was only 1 more guy in front of him on the bike, whom I passed pretty quickly.

Oh well.

Yea, your times add up, but his are 1:14:33

Also, if you were four seconds behind him you should have crossed right on his heels.

I get annoyed when my splits are missing, but this would really irritate me.

Andrew,

I cant speak to the weird timing issues but the guy who finished first (Austin) has the speed to be in that time range.  I looked at his swim time from last year and he swam 8:04.

Congrats on a great race, maybe I should consider some more time in the pool and some lessons!

It's frustrating, but I'll survive!

One of these days we're going to have to set up a BT meeting point after the race so I can finally meet everybody...

I often wonder if I spend more time training, or on BT.... from my race results I think the later.
