Subject: What's wrong with my knee???

I've been to the doc and have an appt with a specialist, but I'm anxious so I thought maybe someone could enlighten me.

A few months ago I was doing lunges and felt some pain in my knee.  After that I began having trouble walking up stairs and ladders.  (I'm in the roofing business so ladders and sloped roofs are common)  I would feel a sharp pain "in" my knee.  Not lateral or medial, but just "inside".  When that happens, it seems that my brain immediately and involuntarily takes the weight off of that knee causing a feeling of buckling.  Also, while climbing the ladder I would occasionally feel pain and then a bit later my knee would lock-up which was very painful and hard to get moving again (not real great on a roof).

I stopped climbing ladders and getting on roofs for the last couple of months and haven't had any lock-ups for quite awhile and it seems to be getting better, but I still feel a slightly painful sensation occasionally on stairs.

Any ideas on what I may have done?

Thanks,

Joe

If it's in the knee it might be one of the cruciate ligaments (PCL, ACL). Have you had any twisting/pivoting accidents that you can remember prior to the lunges?

I sprained my knee 2 weeks ago doing box jumps (pretty sure it is the ACL - the pain is inside the knee too) and if I put too much pressure on it, or move it in a way that aggrevates the knee, it will also "involuntarily" take the weight off of it causing a feeling of buckling, although it never buckles. I would call it a twinge.

Sincerely,

a fellow Joe

Thanks fellow Joe.

No twisting injury.  I guess I'll just continue training and hoping it continues to get better...if not, it's to the doc!

Sounds like patellofemoral syndrome or chondromalacia patella. If you had an injury to a major ligament like the ACL/PCL you have had a ton of pain, a lot of swelling, and you would be very likely to just collapse because of the knee when walking. It is possible to sprain or only partially tear those ligaments however.

An MRI will be the best diagnostic tool for any of these.

I agree with Running DPT.  If you had an acute injury to either the ACL or PCL it would have been accompanied by a lot of swelling.  Patellofemoral syndrome and chondromalacia patella are likely contributers, but it could also be a meniscal tear with your complaints of the joint locking up.

Patellofemoral syndrome can be caused tight tight muscles including: hip flexors, hamstrings, and calves.  Try stretching those muscles in the mean time.
