Subject: Compression socks or compression sleeves

Good day y'all.

Looking to buy either compression socks or sleeves for recovery. Any advice on which one to get and why did you choose socks over sleeves.

The one that I have in mind are from CEP. Any other brand suggestion?

Thanks. Cheers!

I would get the sleeves simply because they are more versatile... for example, I can wear my sleeves with dress socks and dress shoes for work and no one is the wiser... also, in the summer, it's kind of nice being able to use the sleeves without the warmth of the socks.

With that said, I do have a couple of pairs of compression socks as well, but I only wear those on my long runs.

I got the sleeves because I'm going to try wearing them in races.  I can wear the sleeves under my wetsuit but the socks you would have to put on during T1.

Both have seemed to help in recovery, but the socks seem to do a better job of it since they don't trap anything down in the feet and ankles.  The sleeves do have more versatility though.

Firstly I thought these things were all gimics and refused to get them.  BUT THEY ARE NOT!!

I have multiple of both and agree with what has been said.

I have socks, both sugoi and 2xu and I would say the 2xu are a little better, not by much.  Maybe because they are a slightly better (firmer) fit for my calf and I use these more for runs and recovery.

I also have sleeves in salomon, 2xu and I've just ordered some Compressport R2 (Race and Recovery) Calf Guard's which seem to be the best fit for me.  I have small ankles and although I like the salomon look and feel around the calf they are long and swim around my ankle.  2xu is good around lower calf for me but not as good around middle upper calf.

From a functionality and performance point of you I think the sleeves are better.  I race in them and have them under my wetsuit, I do long rides in them and I've done long runs in them.

I do like the socks though for after training (recovery).  As mentioned no cut off points.

In regards to brand, model etc.  Try them on first!!!!!

Stupid newbie question warning.  Why are compression sleeves and socks so good?  What is the purpose?  I warned you that there was a stupid newbie question coming!

Thanks folks for the info. I just purchase compress calf sleeves from Compressport.  Loved the advice that you can wear them under your dress pants.

Cheers!

They help with recovery and may/may not help with performance. This is a really consice article: http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=13830

I prefer socks because I never wear them during activity. I'll use them after long rides or runs, and I wear them on airplanes.

This is my personal experience with compression socks/sleeves... for long runs, I wear compression socks (long run is 10-26.2 miles for me). Without them, my calfs get tired and afterwards, I do feel a tightness in my shins. With them, neither is a problem.

I use compression sleeves for recovery only, and quite often I do sleep with them on, which makes my legs feel fresher (i.e. less tight and achy) the next day. If I've had a particularly long and hard run the day before, and I know that I need to spend quite a bit of time on my feet that day, I even wear when when working... that's on the things I love about the sleeves... with slacks, dress socks and dress shoes, no one is the wiser...
