Subject: Aero basebar width question.
I've been using a Profile T2 wing bar for my bike but was curious about a few things.

It's a 42cm bar, and I've seen some road bars that are 34 or 36cm, would buying a 34cm bar and doing the hipster flop and chop make for a more aerodynamic bar? or would the round sections add more drag than the smaller width would lose? Also would there be any aero benefit to cutting off the upturns on my bar?

And how big of a difference is there between the T2 wing and something like the Felt Devox or 3T Brezza, assuming that the position would stay the same between the bars?

It may be a safe assumption that a 34cm wide base bar- which is very narrow- could potentially have a lower drag coefficient than a 42 cm wide base bar with exactly the same cross sectional shape and aspect ratio.

It may still slow you down though if it changes your handling enough. There has to be a functional component to any aerodynamic consideration. And- while aerodynamics are very important, their significance dwindles when you are grinding up a steep climb for 20 minutes.

Breeza's put down some low drag numbers in wind tunnel tests according to 3T and Cervelo, who have a business relationship where Cervelo provides a great deal of developmental shared data with 3T. They do feel a little... unsure to me on the road. I would use them in a flat triathlon without much cornering, but I might make another choice on a more technical course.

Why would narrow bars slow you down on climbs or cause handling issues? I've been riding an old Maruishi for the last 10 or so years with 35cm bars and I've never noticed much of a difference from the new tri bike with 42 bars.

Narrower handlebars, less leverage and steering closer to center, hence quicker handling and less precise.

How is any of that necessarily bad though? I can see it for downhill mountain biking, but do road races/triathlons ever get that technical?

I'm coming from a mountain bike racing background so all this is still kind of new to me. Other than 2 races this season my road bike experience is ~a decade of easy commuting, so sorry if my questions sound stupid.
