Does anyone know of any half-iron distance races around Minnesota. I'm trying to plan on two for this summer and the only one's I know are the Square Lake Long Course (Stillwater) and the Pigman (Cedar Rapids, IA). Thanks,

Derek

Yeah, that does seem early, but a HIM in the heat of July or August could be brutal. I heard some horror stories from the Spirit of Racine HIM.

There's also the Aurora High Cliffs Triathlon near Appleton. The swim was possibly short, since the best swim split was something like 14:00!

The run course is nice, with about 2/3 of it shaded and about 2/3 of it on trails. Other than that, I think all the ones I know of were mentioned except perhaps the Wisconsin Dells Tinman.

The Tin Man Triathlon (Menominee, WI) has a long course with a 1.5 mi swim, 58.5 bike, and 20K run (not sure why the odd distances). Its held in mid-June.

Rabkaman,
I did the Square Lake as my first HIM last year. It's a pretty good race, but only one water stop on the 56 mile bike. It's pretty hilly on the run and bike and the bike course has a good amount of traffic. I know it all sounds negative, but it is a good race. I plan on doing it again in 2006. Just wanted to point that stuff out, so you can make the best decision, if you're only doing one HIM in 2006.

I plan on doing the Liberty Tri, but that's pretty early. It'll be a good start to the season and then I can end with Square Lake. The good thing about Square Lake is that the weather is normally pretty good in mid-September. However, last year it was in the low 90's.

They've announced on in Chisago Lakes for the last weekend in July. I'll likely be out of town or I'd consider doing it as part of my IM Moo training.
