Total Time = 1h 48m 31s
Overall Rank = 24/26
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

got up at 5:15 (car already packed and in garage). Made bagle. Got coffee at 7-11. Drove to race eating. Walk bike down to race. Note: get backpack, because pushing bike with a bag and cup of coffee not fun! Register at race and get timiming chip. Put bike and bag in transition. Walk around some drinking coffee. Warmup and then go to pier to get ready for race.
Event warmup:

Do some stretching. Lay out transition area. Then put on running shoes and go for short jog to warmup.
Swim
  • 17m 12s
  • 700 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Terrible swim for me. For some reason I couln't catch my breath. Wasn't swimming hard either. Even slowed down to catchup drill type swimming. Seemed like I couldn't do more than 5-6 strokes without going to breast stroke to catch breath. Did some back stroke and that was much faster than breast. I never was physically tired at all from swim.
What would you do differently?:

Do weekly open water swimming. More swimming workouts. HAd many weeks with just 1-2 workouts.
Transition 1
  • 07m
Comments:

Another bad experience! I put the cycling jersey on twice and thought it was on backwards. Tols myself to slow down! Third time it still look backwards! Turns out the zipper somehow inverted and was just inside out and broke! This transition took forever! Should have been out < 2mins
What would you do differently?:

get a tri racing top.
Bike
  • 47m 41s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.87 mile/hr
Comments:

I feel the bike leg went well. HR was very high at first (166), so made myself go slow until HR dropped to ~150. Then I found a gear to keep the HR 155-160. HR actually fell to 152 last few miles at same speed. Nutrition as planned. Gel as soon as get on bike, half way and last mile for the run. Had a bottle of Accelerade during ride.
What would you do differently?:

Had a bottle of water on bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

bike next to me didn't leave me enough room to rack mine! Same girl who knocked someone elses bike down and left it there in T1. This transition went very well overall though. Just had to get bike in rack, shoes off, running shoes on (stretch laces) and helmet off, hat on and out!
Run
  • 31m
  • 3.3 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

After swim and T1, did not have any mental focus for run! For some reason, just didn't want to push myself! I felt I could have ran 3-5 mins faster. Took a few walk breaks, especially in first mile. I didn't get my legs until about mile 2.
What would you do differently?:

HAve some mental drills ready to push through.
Post race
Warm down:

walk with bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swim! and stupid jersey! Mental focus.

Event comments:

Race was fun! Not enough bathrooms! 1 toilet for men! Need more food than bananas, grapes and plain bagels. Volunteers were great and helpful. Lots of people cheering and well organized race! Actually a good race

Great job Cameron...you finished and you are now a Triathlete.  All the training leading up to this has paid off.  Chalk this up to gaining experience, finding weaknesses/strengths and gaining that mental toughness that is needed to improve.  Awesome, Awesome, awesome.  Take a to just sit back and think, I did it and rest up/prepare  for June.

Cameron,

Congrats on the race even though it didn't go as planned. But you did finish. I had a chuckle as well.

I have yet to enter a race but your descritoption was very thorough and honest and gave me a few ideas.

Glad you had fun, Cameron!

We all know what successful tris are about don't we--having more equipment! Go get that tri-top!! Just have them send it to you in plain brown paper wrapping with no return address, and when someone asks what's in it... it's, ah, educational materials for your, um, self-improvement!

Nice pace on your bike!

Dana

Nice job Cameron -- you now have something to compare to for the next one. And I'm sure you will do a couple of things just a tad differently.
