Pre-race routine:

Breakfast at the hotel - Fruit Loops and coffee.
Hydrated - with water and Gatorade
Event warmup:

Rode Bike from Hotel to the Event. about 2 miles. easy ride around to warm up.
Warmup Swimming about 10 minutes
Swim
  • 09m 45s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went ok. My time was actually better then I thought I did. I had some difficulty maintaining the proper breathing. I did take it easy and was able to swim without getting to winded.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could have done different. Need to work on my swimming technique more.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The Transition was not timed - T1 time is added to the Bike time. I estimate about 2 1/2 minutes. My socks got stuck while putting them on - I think because of wet feet.... I was able to put on my jersy while running from the pool to the Bike.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not wear socks, The weather was horrible - so I needed then for this event.
Bike
  • 47m 51s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 17.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Very windy and rainy day. Seemed as though the wind was always in my face. there was a few streaches that I caught a tail wind - then I was flying..... It rained for the last half of the Bike course. not a major down pour, but enough to get you wet.
What would you do differently?:

I think my areobars are set to short, I felt a little crampt in that position. I'll adjusted them and test it out this week.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

The Transition was not timed - T2 time is added to the Run time. I estimate about 1 minute
What would you do differently?:

went ok
Run
  • 35m 47s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was poor for me. As soon as I started running both of my calves started cramping up. It took about 1/2 mile before they stopped cramping, but I ran through it. The course had a lot of hills, I struggled with running up the hills. when I got to a flat area in the middle of the course, I was feeling pretty good. Took a wrong turn and had to double back about 1/4 mile. I lost some time here. the final mile, I started getting a side ache, not real bad though.
What would you do differently?:

I felt I should have done better on the run, even with the Navigation error. I have to train more in hilly conditions. I wasn't used to this at all, and it got the best of me.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some of the post race food. water, bagle, etc....
waited for my wife and daughter to find me, they were suppose to get a picture of me finishing, but were waiting at the wrong place.....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Teh weather was a factor, I woudl have biked much faster if teh winds were not as strong. The run was hilly and it took me by suprise.

Event comments:

We didn't stay for teh post race celebration. The weather was bad and my 3 yr old daughter had enough of the cold and rain - as did my wife.

One cool thing - Heather Gollnick was there - She is a Wisconsin Ironman Champion from 2002. She kicked ass on the course 1:01. Here is a bio on her

Way to go! Too bad about the weather but sounds like you handled it fine. How cool that you have "caught the fever"! Thanks for sharing the report - it helps those of us still looking ahead to a first race......
