I have this OLY on my list for my first race this year, but I can't find any positive reviews about the races last year. Sounds like there were serious organizational problems and some possibly serious safety issues. Thinking about steering clear....anyone else going for sure?

I did the Sprint, and Keith did the Oly last year. The "My first tri" on Saturday did have some organizational issues but the Oly on Sunday wasn’t too bad. I am thinking about doing it again, but I keep thinking of the 30-40mph winds that were blowing when I got there on Friday night that left me awake all night with dread. I hate wind!

Bill,
I thought about this race too (oly), but also heard about some probs as well. Still might do it.
Question I have is this:
Since the swim is in saltwater, is there a fresh water rinse?
I can't imagine sitting on my bike with salt water all over me. Can't be good for the bike.

Okay, if you guys will be there I'm in. I'm all about suffering in good company! Yeah I'm a little worried about the wind, esp. since Joe pointed out crosswinds can be challenging for members of Club Caliente.

BTW, what's jockstrapping?

That makes three of us - Who is this Jock and why does he need to be strapped?

I did the My First Tri last year and in restrospect will not go back except as a spectator or volunteer.

There is no freshwater rinse, I brought a 2 liter bottle of water that i squeezed on my head in transition to knock most of the salt off me.

I remember you saying that, about no freshwater rinse. So, if you are a volunteer, could ya get me a bucket of fresh water????

Athletic supporter = jockstrap

Jockstrapping is a very important and appreciated job. I love it when I have a jockstrap or 2 to help carry my gear or my bike, cheer and then help me when I'm tired after! Have at least 1 or 2 when you can!

I'm in for the Oly too. It will be my first time doing this race, so I hope they get their s*** together this year!

I wanted to do this race but read nothing but bad reviews abut it on several sites.  I'm still undecided, but because I am doing the Oly in Canyon Lake on March 25th, I think I'm going to do the Austin Cactus Challenge Olympic on April 9th instead of doing Galveston.  (I was supposed to volunteer at IMAZ, but my coach has said that I need to train/race that weekend if possible rather than spend the time traveling).

I may volunteer or at least go down and cheer on Saturday, to support the newbies. This will be my "recovery" week after Texas Tri & Canyon Lake.

Yeah I think I'm going to approach this like an unsupported brick workout and bring my own stuff. I liked my Amphipod at Irving, so I'll use it for both Galveston and BSLT.

After hearing rumors that the event has been cancelled, I called the Office of the City Manager in Galveston and they confirmed that the event has been cancelled. No other details but it is definately not going to happen. I guess I'll check into the Rookie Tri in New Braunfels, Tx.

What I heard was that it got kind of political with the original venue and they're just moving the race to a different spot about four miles down the road. I called the number on the race website this morning (1-800-343-4466) and they confirmed the race was still on. They said they will have updated info up on the website in a couple of days.

Hey Guys/Gals.  Not trying to throw cold water on anyone's plans, but just be careful about this race, especially if you are paying money to travel.  This latest snafu (canceling and/or moving the race) is indicative of the problems they had last year.  There have been lots and lots of message board topics devoted to the porblems at last year's race, and it seems they haven't worked out the kinks yet.  Hopefully by April, it will all be good and a first class event, but follow it closely because I'd hate to see someone pay lots of money to travel, only to find an unsafe/disorganized race.

Yeah I'm going to keep training with a target date in that range for my first race of the season, but I'm not going to register. I have hotel reservations, but I can cancel those a few days out w/o charge if I need to. May have to start some hill programs on the Computrainer and head north!

OK. I just gave in to the pressure and registered for Texas Tri @ Canyon Lake. I'll give Gulfman a year or two to get their act together. Besides, TX Tri should be fun with all those HILLS!
