5150 Triathlon Series
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 32m 43s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Athena 40+
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Ken was out of town so Rachel came to my place early in the morning and we drove down. Ate 2 Eggos with a cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Walked down to the water.
Swim
  • 37m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

We were the first non pro/elite wave and the waves were 5 minutes apart so the water was clear of bodies. Only 35 or so in my wave which was really nice. The wave behind us was fast young guys 25-35 I think so I was dreading their gun knowing they were coming and feeling like a chased bunny. Their gun went off just before I hit the first turn buoy and I did get swam over once but it wasn't that bad, just got choppy for a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Not worry about the guys coming up behind me. Focus more on my technique from the beginning.
Transition 1
  • 03m 43s
Comments:

Took me some time to get the socks and shoes on. Also took a drink of water from my water bottle.
What would you do differently?:

Keep it simple, don't think.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 45s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Bonnie beat me by 21 seconds, can't let that happen again. It was a bit bumpy getting to the seawall and it was the quietest race I have ever done. Not many folks out there cheering on the seawall. Sure was fun coming back in.
What would you do differently?:

Go a bit harder, find a good balance.
Transition 2
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

First ride with new pointy helmet. Took another drink of water not knowing where the first water station would be.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Run
  • 1h 22m 4s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where I have been working and this is my best Oly run so far but that's not saying much. I saw Bonnie out there around 1.5 miles and knew she would pass me which she did about a mile later. I need to get faster. The only good news here is that I walked water stations but 'ran' the rest. No walking between aid stations. Took a honey stinger around 4 miles that gave me a boost for a very short time :)
What would you do differently?:

Stay in the race mentally - earn it.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished, found Rachel then went looking for food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to believe that I can go faster and not be afraid of it.

Event comments:

Swim - focus on me and my technique and not worry about anybody else.
Bike - don't be so worried about the run when I am on the bike.
Run - Run.

I had checked out my competition ahead of time and knew there were 14 Athena's registered and half were 40+. As it turns out we had 11 total and only 4 over 40 that finished. I know two DNS and I guess one DNF. I knew I was not first but had no idea where I finished until they called my name.
I finished 4th Athena overall, 2nd in 40+. Qualified for Hyvee in Iowa September 2012 - we are going!

Course: Two loops around Moody Gardens. Support was good. Really hated running through the water park area. Sand all over the sidewalk made it feel slippery and I couldn't get a good grip. Two short but steep hills bugged me more than they should have especially the second time around.

I think this was your best race to date and I am very proud of you.  No more racing while I am out of town!

Way to go Keri.  I was wondering why there was no race report since hardware was earned.

Nice job!!!!  You've had some solid training leading into this race.  Keep it going and your going to crush it in Sept.
