Overall Rank = 12/590

Age Group Rank = 3/58
Pre-race routine:

Nothing too serious. Stayed with a friend, who came to watch the race, so mainly hung out with him prior to the start.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 14m 6s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

For 1/4M this seemed to last forever. I really don't like swimming without my wetsuit, but did not want to use it for such a short distance...
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim better. Seriously, I basically lost a 1st place AG podium finish in this race on the swim. I definitely plan to get some serious coaching to improve my technique for next season.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
What would you do differently?:

I may learn to premount my shoes next season, but for now, this was fine...
Bike
  • 31m 52s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.83 mile/hr
Comments:

I really enjoyed this course. While I felt strong, I was still quite surprised to see that I finished first overall!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this went great! :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

I felt bad because I knocked over a neighboring foot wash basin while swapping shoes. I'm sure they were done with it at that point though, so hopefully it wasn't a big deal!
What would you do differently?:

I definitely need to learn to get out of my shoes while on the bike. I may also invest in running shoe laces that don't require tying.
Run
  • 22m 22s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went well, but was definitely dealing with some GI issues toward the end. Still managed to push it, especially when I could hear someone at my heels for the last mile. Had two people come up afterward to tell me I had a great run, which was really nice!
What would you do differently?:

I could probably stand to throw some speedwork into my training, but overall, this went quite well.
Post race
Warm down:

None, I just hung out with my friend, who was nice enough to buy me a Diet Coke for my efforts!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This race made me realize I now personify the expression "You can't win a race on the swim, but you can lose it on it". While I was very happy that I placed in my AG, it was difficult to see that I could have placed higher with even a mediocre swim. I need to improve on this if I want to consider myself a true triathlete.
