Pre-race routine:

Had the normal steel cut oats, banana and coffee. Grabbed the stuff I laid out the night before and headed out the door to Bandera.
Event warmup:

It took longer to get to the race than I had anticipated. Even though we were there about 45 min before the start, there was a good line to park, and of course a line at packet pick up and the port-o-johns. And I was stupid enough not to put on the KT Tape and compression sleeves before we left, so I tried to get it all on while in line for the port-o-johns. All of the sudden they call "5 min for 50k" and its only 7:05! holy crap! Needless to say I did not get to "flush out the system" before the run started. Walked over to the start of the 50k (which was about a 10 min walk) and just got ready to RUN!

Comments:

I made the rookie mistake of skipping the Cross Roads aid station at mile 26. I was feeling great, but about a half mile down the road I ran out of water in my CamelBak. Shitake! So I had to go the last 5 miles on my own, and that's what killed me at Lucky Peak. EPIC FAIL.
What would you do differently?:

Not skip a necessary aid station, even if feeling good. Use hand held bottles instead of Camel Bak maybe so I can see when I'm getting low. Need to try different things out. Take off long sleeve t-shirt and leave it at drop bag.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much really, just some walking and eating the post-race goodies.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ummm, the hills?

Event comments:

This is an awesome ultra race put on by some really great people. I would do it again in a heartbeat, in fact I can't wait for the next one. Tejas Trails is the best!

Thanks!  It was everything that you said it would be and then some.  Lucky Peak... WOW.  Those hills at the beginning too were pretty amazing.  I'm excited for the next trail run now.  I need to get more miles on the trails beforehand.  Fingers crossed that I can get into Rocky.

Sounds like you're hooked on the trails! Awesome job on those hills -- that was a tough first ultra. You're going to have a blast at Rocky Raccoon. Happy running
