Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: Inside of my big toe numb after long trainer rides Last week was a 5-hour drainer and this week, 6 hours (most of it in aero, which is a fairly new position for me). Surprisingly, no fallout except that the inside half of my right big toe = medial aspect of great toe, distal phalanx = goes numb and stays that way for a day or so. Nothing is numb during the workout. No pain or tingling anywhere, just numbness, and no motor weakness. Did some piriformis stretching after (last week and this) just in case it might have been pressure on the L4 nerve root, and that it might help. Certainly didn't hurt and it felt good, but no effect on the toe. (Had a L4-L5 ruptured disk about 12 years ago and still get some twinges from time to time). My toe is still numb right now, nearly 12 hours post-drainer. Hopefully it goes away like it did last time ... anyone ever experience anything like this? Thoughts? |

I am and I think it may be that the nerve that runs under the toe is getting smushed as most bike shoes have no internal padding to cushion or aleviate pressure. Press the underside of your big toe at the joint and see if you get a reaction. |

My thoughts are to make sure you shift your position frequently, wiggle your toes from time to time. I think the term is "neuropathy" (?) Maybe get off every hour for a minute or two then resume. Trainer time is different than road time IMO |

Maybe your little footsie swelled up during that marathon and caused the toe problem?? Heh ... I suppose I should be grateful none of the really important bits are numb as they too might surely be after that ... I have HUGE footsies. 2nd biggest on BT, width relative to length, and almost certainly biggest length relative to my height. Thankfully it isn't painful or affective, just bothersome. |

Also not when I press on the heel, or on parts of my lower back. P.S. How long does it take for yours to go away? Edited by TriAya 2012-02-16 3:16 PM |

Loosen your shoes? I don't think so. They're fairly loose anyway (just snug enough to not slide front to back or flop up and down) ... although I might loosen the top strap of my right shoe a bit more. Can't hurt. You're definitely right that trainer time is not road time. |

I have high arches and don't suspect it has anything to do with shoe fit. I am thinking you were right to suspect lower lumbar/sacral nerve compression. I can't remember right off what nerve could possibly be involved but you could google search a dermatome map and get a better idea...not sure what can be done so not much help there but I can relate. |

L4 nerve root, if I'm not mistaken (haven't Googled). I think so too. Anyway, now more than 24 hours later, still numb. However, less so and it's not affecting anything, so I guess I'll just ... keep being annoyed about it and scratching my toe to keep seeing if it really is numb! |

Regular 86 Albany, Ga | Subject: RE: Inside of my big toe numb after long trainer rides You could try an inversion table post ride? I feel like the trainer puts more of an axial load on my lower spine than road riding. Maybe save the longer efforts for the road and keep trainer rides relatively shorter and higher intensity? Just a couple things I have been considering as well... |

Just a couple things I have been considering as well... No inversion tables here, but I might pay a guy to hold my legs outstretched. Good idea! Cannot ride on the roads here. Not really. I have--with a mountain bike in the dead of night so there are relatively fewer vehicles--but lack of vision presents its problems, too. For me, and others. |

I wouldn't rule out shoe fit just yet... You said your shoe was snug, is there enough room between your toes and the front of the shoe? Are any of your toenails coming in contact with the upper surface of the shoe? If neither of those I would pull out the insert in your shoe if you can and replace it with a solid insert like this; http://www.powersteps.com/Original This resembles something closer to a custom orthotic, not a flimsy liner you get at the store. If none of these options work I work I would look at changing your bike fit or saddle. In the meantime you should be doing some frequent standing intervals\altering your position some during those long training rides. I would rank resolving this issue as high priority as I'm sure you are. You could possibly be at risk of doing permanent nerve damage. Gl! |

Member 35 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Inside of my big toe numb after long trainer rides TriAya - 2012-02-16 3:15 PM P.S. How long does it take for yours to go away? Sometimes it goes away while I'm riding but more often than not, it will go away in under 30 minutes after I'm done riding.
