Subject: Elevation Question

I started to think about this the other day, will I experience any advantage in my HIM this July if the elevation of the race is at 900 ft and I live and train higher than that?

Here are the specifics and then I would like to hear what your thoughts are on it. I live and do most of my training at about 3800 ft. When I go up to see my folks I bring my shoes (the kids are busy being spoiled and I have more time to run), they live at about 4300 ft and while I am there I like to swim at their local pool which is about to 4900 ft. My HM at the beginning of June will range from 6200 ft to 4900 ft. Now if you tell me that this will help my training, then this summer my son and I will go camping and we can find some spots that are close to 7000 ft to camping/ride/run. Thoughts, if there is any advantage, how much will it be? I think it might be slightly more mental than physical , but does anyone have some number I can look at? Thanks.

Insignificant to start with. You want to live at high elevation and train at low elevation. Training at high elevation does not allow the same training you would get with more O2. 1-2K feet isn't going to make any difference.

IMO Living at a higher elevation and training at that elevation will have a benefit.  It increases your red blood cell count.  Not as much of an advantage to search for a higher elevation to train at.

But, not as much of a benefit as living high and training low.

Here is my 2 cents.  I live near Albuquerque (5,300) and work in Santa Fe (7,000) and train in both cities.  I find that racing at lower altitudes (i.e. las vegas at 2,000) my effort feels much easier for the same result and that I don't tire as quickly.  However, from my understanding it takes weeks or months at altitude to gain that benefit. I know that several pro's train at altitude in Boulder.
