Moonrocket - 2012-08-17 5:34 PM Good luck this weekend! I've been totally slacking this week at a sales meeting in San Francisco. We took a boat out for a tour of Alcatraz one night and I did contemplate what the swim for escape from Alcatraz would be like. It looks pretty cool. I ate well, drank well and slept well, so I'm ready to get back to work this weekend. I did bet a Navy Seal that I could beat him to shore if we both jumped off the boat half way there.

Haha! This swim in Escape from Alcatraz is cake compared to the rest of the course.  Nothing like a nice current to take you into shore.  It was my fastest swim ever

Anytime you can bet a Navy seal you can beat them at anything is a good time!Smile

Hi All - I've spent the week figuring out what I want to do next and I've decided to sign up for a HIM in October.  It's the REV 3 event in Maryland and it looks like a pretty tough course and I only have 7 1/2 weeks.   But I love a challenge to get me back on track (I've been eating like the guy in the monty python sketch who gets offered one more wafer thin mint - see the link below) and drinking like Hunter S. Thompson). Laughing

I'm gonna work on a training plan (I think I have a pretty good idea of what I will need to do to make it to the start line) and I'll post it this weekend with the hope of getting some much needed feedback.

Here is the link to the Python sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJZPzQESq_0

I went out for my first long run yesterday afternoon after not running for more than a month... good to know I still can do it even if my hips hurt like an old lady this morning...Hoping to get a swim in today and a long bike in tomorrow.

Enjoy the day everyone and good luck Melissa and Thor!

I've been absent from the group, but I just wanted to let you guys know that I DID IT! I had a successful first sprint triathlon! I have no idea what my times were yet (didn't even bother wearing a watch..I'll find out once it's posted online), but I was actually not the slowest one, and I was pushing hard enough to feel woozy and at the end and started kind of wheezing after I was finished. So I'm happy with the experience, and I know I'll do it again sometime. I don't know if I'll ever want to do more than a sprint distance, but that's okay with me.

Now I'm looking into some running events for September/October so that I don't just go back to bad habits!

Way to go Christine!  You worked hard and accomplished your goal of completing a sprint tri!  Be proud and have an extra serving of pancakes tomorrow as a sweet reward for your effort!  Then let us know your times so we can give you the props you deserve!

YES!  Your a triathlete!  Way to go!  Maybe post us a race report.  Congratulations and hope all your future training goes well and meets you with success.

Ok, the times were posted, and now I've got a race report up! I am very happy with everything except the bike time. Next time I will train much more on bike, and rent a road bike (if I don't own one by then).

The main thing I learned is that I am NOT running hard enough in training. I have no idea where my run time came from, but it is the fastest I have ever run. Adrenaline is some good stuff!

Race report done.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=456719&posts=1&start=1

Glad I didn't do anything stupid and enter the Oly. I think I would have died. Amazing the drop in fitness after just about 6 weeks of no training. Foot bothered me marginally, but didn't cause the slow times.

Swim was a brutal weed infested swim. Went with no wetsuit. Little chilly, I think water temps in the mid 60's if i had to guess.

Bike was okay but I could have/should have kicked it up a notch.(Love the new tri bike shoes, went barefoot and cut alot of time off transition)

Run...brutal hilly trail run. Damn near killed me. Had about 5-6 gazelles pass me and they were doing the Oly. Speedy little bastards!Smile(pardon the language!)

An okay result all things considered. Unless i pull a rabbit out of the hat and i do one in Phoenix in November, race season is over. Now to improve my run and bike while at least swimming once and awhile so i don't start from scratch next spring!

Dust Devil is done!  Won my age group, there were four of us.  I improved my time in all areas which is good because I did not train the last two weeks because of injuries to the bottom of my feet.  I knew my bike portion would be my strongest and even with a decent head wind I managed to shave off 5 minutes.  The first times that came out had me swimming in less than 10 minutes, riding in 40 (which matched my watch) but running a 5k in 22 minutes...um nope! I liked those times and they can be my goal but that all they are, those times belonged to another triathlete.  Mine were, 12:37S, 46:00B, and a 31 something run.

Improvement feels good.

Kudos to those who raced this weekend!

Quick post before heading off to work... I still have to make my plan for the HIM.  Here is my question - how much do I push my work on the bike since that is where I'm strongest and its the part of the training that has the least chance of injury.  I'm thinking I should be doing 20%-30% more than my OLY to HIM bridge plan calls for especially considering that I'm about 20-25% behind in my swim and run training.

So my question is - how do I maximize my training while minimizing my chance for injury.  My HIM is October 7.

Love to hear your thoughts.  For those of you with a gold/silver membership - you can check out the training plan on BT - it's the OLY-->HIM Bridge Plan.

Thanks for your help!

Two great things, well three if you include Melissa kicking butt!

1)A guy in the sprint, one leg, one prosthetic...that is determination!

2)A blind girl in the Oly...I can't even begin to imagine swimming blind in weed infested lake, biking 40k and doing 2 laps on a difficult trail run!

That my friends is determination!

First real training run in about 6 weeks this morning. 4 miles, slow but steady. Felt way better then the race on Sunday...

Bought a new bike, pedals, cycling shoes and bike computer for my wife last night. Forgot to get a cycle trainer tire...damn, will be needing that sooner than later! Suppose I should find a cycle trainer for her as well...

I think you can be fairly aggressive on the bike compared to the other two. I would say up the medium distance rides rather than your long ride. The plan should be fine for the longest one.

That plan seems to have a lot of 45min rides...I would maybe switch one out a week for a longer distance 25-30mi ride to get you to about 1:20-1:30 timewise. Otherwise keep the short recovery session and one of the 45min rides as an aerobic effort. I don't think by doing this you will put yourself at risk for injury at all.

Thanks Melissa for your suggestions on the HIM.  Six weeks to go and I'm starting a rest week.  Nice to clock a quick ride and get home in time to have dinner with the kids.

Question:  In the next couple of weeks, I want to focus on nutrition... What do I need to know?  At this point - I don't think I eat enough.  I've been averaging about 200 calories an hour and eating things like protein bars, fig newtons, cliff bars, peanuts, dried bananas and chocolate chips.  I also need to drink more...  What can I be doing to maximize performance?
