pondering the thought? Tri bike or cross bike. That is my two options. Past participants and SF locals what is your rec. Also, do I assume correctly I do not need my aero disk?

I have yet to see anyone prefer a tribike for that course. You should have just gotten their newsletter with the bike course description and help, they explain why a tribike is not necessary.

edited to add:  Those newsletters and course descriptions are super helpful.  I'm guessing alot of folks get them and don't give them even two seconds worth of attention, but if it's sitting in your spam folder or hasn't been read yet you should check it out!

Got and like it. Sometime it seem those are targeting first timers; i didnt know how good they were. I have an older cross bike. I guess it will have to do.

Where are you coming in from, have you thought about renting a bike (if there's any left)?  We're flying in, and staying for two weeks, so we're leaving our bikes at home and renting carbon road bikes in town for the race.

I've done the race two times, once on a road bike, once on a road bike I rode at 78 degree seat angle with shortie aerobars. It was the same bike I used for the Nice Triathlon (Ironman France). \

The set-up that was a road bike with a zero-offset seatpost, tri saddle and shortie ITU legal aerobars was the best. I lost time with the regular road bike.

The top pros used tri bikes with a couple exceptions among the ITU pros, who rode their ITU bikes. Obviously the key elements are cornering, descending and climbing.

Here is the bike I used but shown in this photo with a different seatpost:

And here is the bike in the actual race configuration on the Col d' Vence in Nice, France as used at Alcatraz:

Unless you have the set up Tom has I'd say without a doubt a road bike. I went back and forth about TT or road bike for the race and I went with the roadie and glad I did.

+1 Road bike.

Have fun, the whole race is great!

I wouldn't use a cross bike if you had a choice, but you would need to be comfortable on the tri bike on steep ups & downs. If you have slick tires and light components on the cross bike then go for it.

I used a road bike, trek pilot 5.0, RIP.

Good info. Thx. Looks like my cross with road tires thought about using my stock rims from my P3 or if I can track down carbon pads maybe use my race rims (el cheepo grigro 60mm). But I have know idea how they will work??? I am going to need a new seat post it does not allow the seat to pitch down enough.
