Subject: Public pools in Novi / swim coaches?
Anyone know of any good public pools in the walled lake/Novi area? I belong to LA Fitness and just moved out to the Novi area and was VERY VERY VERY disappointed with over all facilities at the Novi LA Fitness (formerly Ballys), so much so that I wonder why LA Fitness would want to put their name on such a place. I was working out at a community center (Warren) and figured it was just as cheap to get a membership. The LA in Warren was a brand new building, very clean and nice. I was excited to go there, it made me WANT to go work out, at least there were clean showers and nice facilities to get changed in. Since moving out here i have not wanted to get to the gym and its been quite some time since i put some quality time in at the pool. So back around to the initial question, anyone know of any good pools in the area? and/or any know of a swim coach out this way?

I've done an indoor tri at the Lifetime in Commerce and I can vouch that the aquatic center is very nice. Can't speak for the coaching, though.

The Livonia Rec Center has a great pool.....but the non-resident membership fee is pretty expensive, if I remember correctly.

I work out at both the YMCA and Lifetime, formerly at the old Novi Bally's.  - the pools are much better at Lifetime :-)

As for coaching - Michigan's very own Jenny (JD) Birmelin resides in Farmington Hills and coaches out of the Farmington YMCA.  She just swam the English Channel in August, and was the first MI woman to swim it solo as well as had the fastest American time in all of 2011!

I swam with her through FAST and she is an AMAZING coach.

Thank you for your responces! I am very aware that Lifetime has a nice pool but there is no way i am going to pay as much as they are asking for a membership there. I know when i was younger the local highschool offered swim lessons at night. I was hoping that there was a highschool in the area that did the same.

Thanks for the tips on coaches.

JD does not coach officially for the YMCA, so if you are interested, I can pass along her information.

Just stumbled upon this forum... I'm looking for swim lessons/classes - can you post or email me the info for JD?
