Pre-race routine:

Originally planned as a family trip, but because of an illness, I got up way too early Sunday morning and drove out to Assateague for the race.
Event warmup:

Excited/nervous about the ocean swim, so I swam around for about 10 minutes.
  • 19m 46s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters

This was really fun, but I was horrible at it. Ran into the water at a decent clip, dived under a few waves, and made it to the turn buoy without incident. Then, the second or third wave that came along ripped my goggles halfway off, but fortunately, somehow, my contacts stayed in. Got readjusted, but after that, everything was off, and I couldn't sight worth a damn. But still, an awesome experience and I felt fine coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Not enough pool or open water practice this year, much less ocean swimming.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s

Only bit of adventure here is that I decided to go sockless for the first time. No issues at all.
  • 39m 44s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr

Well, the swim had already put me out of contention for anything, but the fun part of starting in one of the last waves was all the passing I got to do here. Other than standing up to maintain speed on the bridge each way, I just tried to stay in aero and maintain a good pace. I did get passed by one guy with rear disk, etc., plus played some (non-drafting) leapfrog for a bit and was then passed permanantly by someone riding strong on a road bike. Very pleasant route, very shady, and fun turns in the subdivision.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, had plenty of energy for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s

No issues, although it was a little tough getting my shoes on without socks. Who knew?
What would you do differently?:

Maybe just stick with socks.
  • 23m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile

My Garmin actually measured this as 3.25, and even the website claims this is a 3.2 mile run. Regardless, I felt great and my performance showed it. My only complaint about the run course was lack of shade, but the temperature was ok, and it was great having everyone camping outside cheering us on. That, plus still having lots of people to pass, was great motivation. Tried picking off one last guy at the end, but was gassed and I faded a bit just before the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really happy with my running right now.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, gatorade, and shower. Then packed up for the ride home. Thank you, Maryland State trooper, for just giving me a warning for going 15 over.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of rest the night before, and unfamiliarity with ocean swimming.

Event comments:

Fun race in a unique locale. But geez did it feel like the field was stacked. Can't control that, though, and still had a great time. I'll be coming back (hopefully with a healthy family) next year.
