New Bike Shoes

Lately, my feet have been bothering me (outside edge, up near the ball) after being on my bike for an hour or hour-and-a-half.  I just have some inexpensive specialized bike shoes that are 2 years old and I have SPD pedals.

Any idea what the life on bike shoes is?  I've been told that my shoes suck by a reputable bike fitter, but I'm not sure what that really means - speed, durability, positioning, etc.

Thoughts?
