Pre-race routine:

Stayed overnight at our friend's house in Bellevue. Pasta dinner and got to bed around 11. Up at 5:40 for half bagel with PB and banana and water. Arrived at race site at 7am. I was racing with two friends today and it was fun to have them right on the rack with me.
Event warmup:

Lake water was pretty warm. 5 mile is a peat lake, so the water is coffee colored. A bit strange at first, but it actually keeps the lake warmer because the color is so dark. Erin and I got in the water about 10 mins early to settle our nerves and get comfortable. I had only done one OWS prior to the event this year, but was confident that the short distance would be okay. It was kind of misty-rainy, but the air temp was about 63, so not cold, thank goodness.

Good swim for me! No backstroke at all! Got a tad congested around the second buoy and then when I really tried to push it into the beach, I was catching a lot of chop and was not timing my breathing and stroke very well. Need to work on more interval-type training to figure this part out. First 400 m were the best, most even swimming I have done in a race. Hooray!
What would you do differently?:

Figure out that last push so I don't feel so frantic trying to get into the beach.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s

Wet suit totally stuck on my timing chip. Grrr. I did remember to eat my energy sharkies and got in and out pretty quick. Transition distances were nice and short which helped my time a lot.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This was a good transition. I felt awesome coming out of the swim.

Had a rabbit to chase most of the race, but she flatted about 3/4 way through the second lap. Bummer. Pace was good, felt like I left enough for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I train on my bike a lot. Definitely my favorite part.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s

Jerks on the rack with me left no room. Spent 10+ seconds moving other peoples' bike so that Erin and I would have space. Pissed me off. Had a hard time getting shoes tied. Got to get some yankz. Forgot to eat more energy sharkies, but not sure if they would have sat well since I did not drink much on the bike. This was a quick transition considering the rack issues.
What would you do differently?:

Solve the shoelace problem.

Going uphill right off the bat was tough. My legs were not happy. Had a great pacer to chase for the whole run, so that kept me going. It was getting humid and my sunglasses kept fogging up. Annoying. Really pushed it at the end - race rabbit and I hauled it through the park for the last quarter mile. That was fun. Was a tad afraid I might throw up on the kids who were taking our timing chips at the finish line. Definitely gave it my all though!
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Do more intervals. I don't really like running, so this is my weak spot. Maybe I can crack that 8min/mile mark by the end of the summer.
Post race
Warm down:

John, Kevin, and Derek met me at the finish line. John had finished about 15 minutes earlier. It was his first tri, so we had a great time debriefing the race. I hooked another one into t multi-sport! Ate a couple of oranges once my stomach settled a bit. Waited for friend Erin to finish. So fun to have friends who are into this madness with me. Gathered up gear to head home. Top two finishers of this event came in under an hour. Holy crap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough running. Everything else went really well.

Event comments:

PR for me, so I thought it was a great race! Nice venue, lots of folks out directing the course. Apparently there were some big crashes right at the bike entrance back into the park because the turn in was not being announced early enough and people were going too fast to make the turn, plus the pavement was wet, and there was gravel. My husband gave me a yell about a block before the turn in to slow down and get ready. Such a good supporter!
